Natalie Wood's death is still a mystery. Her sister says Robert Wagner killed her.
For over 30 years, Natalie Wood’s death has been a Hollywood mystery. At the time in 1981, it was ruled an accident, but the case was reopened in 2011, and just this year it was reclassified as a “suspicious death.”
Robert Wagner, Wood’s former husband, also was recently deemed a “person of interest” by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials; he’s denied any involvement in her death.
A new podcast titled Fatal Voyage: The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood seeks to explain the murky circumstances behind her untimely passing. Her sister, Lana Wood, is a guest on the series and on Wednesday spoke to Megyn Kelly on Today. When asked if she thought Robert Wagner murdered her sister, she did not hesitate to reply “Yes.”
Wood said that Natalie and Robert got into a heated argument that night. She explained what she thinks went down afterward, as witnessed by the boat’s skipper, Dennis Davern.
“Dennis … left, went outside, turned up the music because they were being so loud,” said Wood, “and started walking toward the back of the boat. … [Wagner] was standing there and Dennis said, ‘Where’s Natalie?’ and he said, ‘She’s gone.’”
Lana Wood is still holding out for an honest explanation from Wagner. She told Kelly about confronting him in Palm Springs, Calif., last year.
“I saw him sitting in the bar … and I had a waitress bring him a note saying, ‘RJ, it’s Lana, and I really need to talk to you,’” she said. “It took him about 45 minutes, but finally he came out.”
She recalled saying to him, “I’ve known you all my life — why won’t you talk to [the police]?” Wagner’s response puzzled Wood; he replied, “No, I’ve known you all your life.”
Wood asks only one thing of Wagner, who hasn’t spoken to police about her sister’s death since the case was reopened.
“I want him to tell the truth,” she said. “I want him to be a man and to own what has happened and to be strong enough to do that — to tell the truth.”
