NBC’s ‘Parenthood’ Getting Italian Remake With Cattleya and RAI

ROME – “Parenthood” is being transposed from Berkeley to Rome in the first international adaptation of NBC’s hit TV show.

NBCUniversal Formats has brokered a deal with Italy’s Cattleya to produce the remake of long-running U.S. family drama which will air on state broadcaster RAI’s flagship Rai Uno station.

Created by Jason Katims, “Parenthood” ran to more than one hundred episodes in the U.S. on NBC from 2010 to 2015.

The Italian version, titled “Tutto Può Succedere” (“Anything Could Happen”) marks Rai Uno’s first ever U.S.-scripted remake and a major coup for Cattleya, which is expanding its TV activity after scoring a global hit with naturalistic crimer “Gomorrah,” produced for Rupert Murdoch’s Sky paybox and sold to more than 100 territories.

Cattleya is also known for churning out film remakes, including Italian versions of “Groundhog Day” and French megabit “Welcome to the Sticks.” Cattleya’s shareholders include Universal Studios.

Production on the Italo version of “Parenthood” began yesterday, April 20th, in Rome. The main cast, packed with Italo A-listers, includes: Pietro Sermonti, Maya Sansa, Ana Caterina Morariu, Alessandro Tiberi, Camilla Filippi, Fabio Ghidoni, Licia Maglietta and Giorgio Colangeli. The 13 100-minute episode first season will bow on Rai Uno early next year.

“We fell in love with ‘Parenthood’ the first time we watched it and immediately recognized how well it could be adapted to contemporary Italian society, in which the concept of family and its love hate dynamics remain at the core,” said Cattleya topper Riccardo Tozzi in a statement. Sadly the country these days has a plummeting birth rate. But that should not impact the show’s prospects on Rai Uno, which is Italy’s top-rated channel and also the station that caters to its widest demographic.

The young writing team comprises Filippo Gravino (“Gomorrah”), Guido Iuculano (“Caruso”) and Michele Pellegrini (“Fuoriclasse”). The two directors are Lucio Pellegrini (“Now or Never”) and Alessandro Angelini (“L’aria salata,” Il clan dei Camorristi”), “who have already proven highly attuned to these themes,” Tozzi noted.

Rai Fiction topper Eleonora Andreatta commented that she is excited to explore the show’s themes “within a contemporary Italian multi-generational setting.”

JoAnn Alfano EVP, Scripted Programming, NBCUniversal International Television Production, said the remake “realises our ambition to create genre defining drama and comedy.”

“With a fantastic Italian writing team, director and cast on board, ‘Tutto Può Succedere’ promises to be as genuinely funny and emotional as the original series that inspired it,” she enthused.
