Neil Patrick Harris dropped over $170K on Disney Haunted Mansion painting
How much does it take to outbid billionaire Jeff Bezos for a beloved painting from Disneyland? Just ask Neil Patrick Harris.
The Series of Unfortunate Events actor stopped by The Late Late Show and wound up talking about his collection of Disney memorabilia. When asked by host James Corden what is the most ridiculous thing he’s ever spent money on, Harris told the tale of that one time he unknowingly went head-to-head with the Amazon CEO.
“I love stuff from the Haunted Mansion. The Haunted Mansion in Disney is, like, my favorite thing ever,” the actor began. “I try and acquire as many things that are from the actual Haunted Mansion as possible, and there was an auction in L.A. a couple of years ago, and I bid on and won one of those Haunted Mansion stretching portraits.”
The original portrait features “a bearded guy and he’s in boxer shorts” and he’s standing on a TNT barrel.
“I just wanted to get it, and I spent way too much money on it, because I was just bidding on an app. I won’t say how much, but it was way too much,” Harris explained. “It turns out I was bidding against one of the wealthiest people in the world. And I still wanted it bad enough that I ended up getting it.”
Although Harris didn’t name Bezos, he made it pretty clear that was the billionaire in question. “I don’t want to say his name… because I still want free two-day Prime shipping when boxes come to my house,” he joked.
So, how much did Harris spend to outbid Bezos — a guy who is estimated to be worth around $112 billion? The actor declined to say, but we happen to know the dollar amount.
In 2016, the Chicago Tribune reported on Van Eaton Galleries’ “Souvenirs of Disneyland” auction, revealing an original “stretching portrait” from the park’s Haunted Mansion attraction sold for $172,500.
We’re sure Harris and husband David Burtka’s 7-year-old twins appreciate it.
