Netflix fails to dominate Golden Globes despite most nominations of any studio

Netflix was poised to rule the 2020 Golden Globe Awards. The streamer earned nominations across the film and TV categories, with 34 nods in total — more than any other studio or network. In his opening monologue, host Ricky Gervais even quipped, “Everyone’s watching Netflix. This show should just be me going, ‘Well done, Netflix, you win everything. Good night.’”

Simply put, that was not what happened. In the end, only two awards went to Netflix titles: Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture (Laura Dern for Marriage Story), and Best Actress in a TV Drama, (Olivia Colman for The Crown).

Surprisingly, the expected awards-season juggernaut The Irishman didn’t pick up a single trophy. The three-and-a-half-hour gangster epic earned five nominations, including Best Motion Picture — Drama and Best Director (Martin Scorsese).

In fact, Netflix tied for awards won with two other major streaming platforms: Amazon (with Fleabag picking up Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy and Best Actress for creator-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge) and Hulu, with The Act’s Patricia Arquette and Ramy’s Ramy Youssef winning Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film and Best Actor in a TV Comedy, respectively.

All three made out better than the other streamer on the battlefield, however: Apple TV+, with three nominations (all for The Morning Show) went home empty-handed.
