Netflix's new Minecraft show: Here's what the trailer reveals about the animated series

Popular video game Minecraft burst onto the scene in 2011 with a unique pixelated style and gave players the ability to created 3D worlds with colorful blocks. Today, the game has more than 140 million players online creating and playing each month.

And it's no secret that a Minecraft movie directed by Jared Hess ("Napoleon Dynamite," "Nacho Libre") is coming possibly in 2025 and starring Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks and Emma Myers.

Now it appears that Netflix is bringing an animated Minecraft series to its long list of film and TV productions.

Here's everything we know about the Netflix Minecraft series so far.

Is there a Minecraft show on Netflix?

While plenty of gaming YouTubers like Pewdiepie and Jacksepticeye have been playing through Minecraft for years and making a gaming series out of it, it's finally time for Minecraft to get the animated treatment. Well, more animated.

Netflix is creating a narrative animated series based on the fan-favorite sandbox video game with Minecraft developer Mojang in the co-producer role. The series will introduce some new characters and will have an original story.

The plot and tentative release date are still a ways away from being announced.

Is there a Minecraft TV series?

While we wait for more news on Netflix's Minecraft show, there is a Minecraft miniseries produced by Mojang Studios that's free to watch on the Mattel Action YouTube channel.

The miniseries aired from October 2017-May 2018 and has two seasons: Challenge of the Spooky Isles and Mystery of the Greek Isles.

Why is Minecraft Story Mode not available on Netflix?

The upcoming Minecraft show on Netflix isn't the streaming service's first foray into the world of Minecraft. "Minecraft: Story Mode" was created by Telltale Games and released as an original series on Netflix on Nov. 27, 2018.

"Minecraft: Story Mode" was an interactive animated TV series that allowed viewers to use their TV remote control or keyboard to make decisions that would affect the story, characters and ending.

The Netflix description read, "Take control of an adventure set in the Minecraft universe. The future of the world is at stake, and your decisions shape the story ― so choose wisely."

"Minecraft: Story Mode" was canceled and removed from Netflix on Dece. 5, 2022.
