Nicole Kidman on her 20th Golden Globe nomination: ‘It’s what I dreamed of when I was a little girl to have the chance to play extraordinary lead roles’
Nicole Kidman’s Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture for “Babygirl” marks the 20th time she’s been recognized by the organization — but she’s as thankful as if it were the first.
“I’m incredibly grateful to have the support so we can launch the movie,” Kidman tells Gold Derby exclusively. “It’s such an acknowledgment of just the whole cast, of Halina Reijn, of the subject matter. It helps us launch a small film in a big, big arena.”

The actress appreciates the global perspective that the voting body brings, given its widespread membership across 85 countries. “They acknowledge so many films from around the world, and they choose things from different countries, different places,” she says. “You can discover films as well through what what they choose, which is what I love. That’s so helpful for a small movie.”
In the film, Kidman plays Romy Mathis, a high-powered CEO who risks her career, her marriage and her family as she embarks on a life-changing romance with an intern played by Harris Dickinson. “It’s a gift as an actor when you’re given [roles] that are so unique,” she says. “It’s an unusual film, but it also is an entertaining film. And so, hopefully, that is what’s sinking into people. I’m so lucky to have the opportunity to play these roles. It’s what I dreamed of when I was a little girl to have the chance to play extraordinary lead roles. It’s a female odyssey, it’s about a complex beautiful character being portrayed without being destroyed. Romy is not destroyed. She actually is on the road to an enormous amount of discovery and healing, which I love. She’s becoming more fully realized… And that is so rare.”
Kidman’s also thrilled about some of the other contenders on the Globes lineup. “There are great films out there!” she says. “I went and saw Wicked over Thanksgiving — paid a ticket, saw it in the cinema, and everyone was clapping. So to see that, just going from strength to strength is fantastic. And then, obviously, I’m so close to Zoe Saldana. So to see her acknowledged is beautiful, and Billy Bob Thornton, who I love. There are so many wonderful performances in that group. I’ve still got a lot of viewing to do!”
