Nicole Kidman Says She Took ‘Batman Forever’ Role So She Could “Kiss Batman”

Nicole Kidman has a peculiar reason why she decided to star in Joel Schumacher’s 1995 film, Batman Forever.

In a L’Officiel profile, Kidman looked back at her first DC Comics Universe cinematic role, admitting that many were baffled by an actress of her caliber taking on the role of Dr. Chase Meridian, Batman’s love interest, that was created solely for the film.

“Everyone’s like, ’Why are you doing that?’ I’m like, ‘Because I get to kiss Batman!’” she said. Kidman defended her decision further, noting, “The thing people don’t understand is, it’s not about the check. A lot of mainstream big blockbusters that I do are hopefully different.”

Kidman had another chance to do a superhero flick when she starred in Aquaman and its sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. However, she divulged that when the franchise’s director James Wan reached out saying he had a role in mind for her, she was hopeful that it would be a horror film. “I’d really want to work with him in horror,” the actress said of the filmmaker, who helmed the Saw, Insidious and The Conjuring franchises.

It turns out the Oscar winner is a big fan of the genre, despite not having much experience as a scream queen yet. She does hope that her interest in these types of films will lead to the darker roles she craves. “I’ve not done classic horror yet. Hardcore horror,” she said. “I’m putting it out there because I watch hardcore horror. I’m a fan of Ti West!”

While Kidman doesn’t have a “hardcore” horror flick lined up yet, she does star in Netflix’s upcoming thriller, The Perfect Couple. The limited series, which is based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, features Kidman as matriarch Greer Garrison, who is one of the suspects after a murder on her son’s wedding day. The show premieres on Sept. 5.
