Late-night hosts tackle Lori Loughlin, Felicity Huffman college scam: 'I'm so disappointed in you, Aunt Becky'
Whether it was a “Becky with the good hair” reference, a jab at Aunt Becky from Fuller House, or a Desperate Housewives quip, late-night hosts across the board had something to say on Tuesday night after news of the mind-boggling college admissions scandal hit the airwaves.
“I’m so disappointed in you, Aunt Becky. I expected this from a Desperate Housewife but you?!” The Daily Show‘s Trevor Noah joked in reference to Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman.
Both actresses were among those charged when the F.B.I. handed down indictments involving a nationwide scandal that allegedly saw wealthy parents buying their children’s way into top colleges through a middleman. According to unsealed documents, some of these means apparently involved cheating on college entrance exams and passing off non-athletic teens as athletic recruits — even allegedly Photoshopping kids faces onto athletic stock images.
The Late Show‘s Stephen Colbert wasn’t surprised over Loughlin’s involvement. “Loughlin was part of a notorious scheme where they made a pair of twins pretend to be one person,” he quipped about how Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen both played Michelle Tanner on Full House as children. “No one knew, no one knew! Millions of dollars ripped off.”
Jimmy Kimmel predicted Loughlin “could be the ‘Becky with the good hair’ that Beyoncé warned us about” on her Lemonade album. But the late-night host refocused his barbs at his “arch-nemesis” Matt Damon as part of his longstanding and totally fake feud with the actor.
“I knew there was a reason Matt Damon got into Harvard,” he joked. “It didn’t add up.”
It seemed most of the material oriented around Loughlin and the fact that she played the warm, lovable Aunt Becky. Seth Meyers on Late Night added more, saying this scandal is “the second worst thing Lori Loughlin has” done, in reference to Fuller House.
“I gotta say I think something like this could really hurt Hollywood’s reputation,” The Late Late Show‘s James Corden joked, but he, too, had another Aunt Becky gag to add to the pile.
“It looks like Aunt Becky could be going from Full House to the big house,” he said.
Personally, there weren’t enough puns on Desperate Housewives.
