NLE Choppa Fires Back At Critics Of Nelly-Inspired “It’s Getting Hot” Song: “It’s Almost Gold!”
At the 2023 MTV VMAs, NLE Choppa set the record straight about his recently criticized track, “It’s Getting Hot,” which reimagines Nelly’s 2009 hit, “Hot In Herre.” While speaking with VIBE, the Memphis rapper fired back at haters with some stats.
“I’m not gonna lie, at first it started out like a lot of people were hating on it, but it’s almost Gold now,” he said of the nostalgic track that currently has 28.5 million streams on Spotify and stands at No. 36 on the Billboard Hot Top Hip-Hop/R&B chart.
“It’s climbing up the charts. It’s been streaming tremendously. Nelly messed with it and at the end of the day, God did his thing. Nobody else, but him. All praise to the most high,” he added.
NLE released the nostalgic video last month, in which he’s dressed as Nelly. He sports the sweat band, oversized jersey, Air Force 1’s, shorts that stop below the knee, and of course, a band-aid under his left eye.
During the VMAs Pre-Show, the “Do It Again,” rapper performed his Cash Money/Hot Boys tribute song “Ain’t Gonna Answer” and also hit the stage with the St. Louis star for the first time.
“Man, it was a beautiful thing. It’s a full circle moment,” he recalled of their performance before mentioning how much his mother is also a fan of Nelly. “Growing up, watching Nelly and hearing my mama fantasize [about] how much Nelly is beautiful, how good he look and stuff… But sh*t, it was a full circle moment just to be with him, turn up with him.”
Nelly also co-signed the homaging song on social media as he reposted NLE’s promo post with, “Go up nephew,” to which the 20-year-old replied, “Nelly Approved [green checkmark emoji].
The release of “It’s Getting Hot,” provoked mixed reactions — with some fans taking a liking to the song and others saying “he should be arrested,” for touching such a classic hit.
On the flip side, one fan thought, “This hard actually it’s different to me,” as another said, “Bro I deada** thought this was really Nelly at first.”
