Off Broadway’s Lortel Awards Like ‘Here Lies Love,’ ‘Fun Home’ and ‘The Open House’ (COMPLETE LIST)

“Here Lies Love,” the immersive staging of the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim tuner about Imelda Marcos, got up and walked away with five Lucille Lortel Awards, the New York legit industry’s Off Broadway-centric kudofest.
The musical didn’t, however, pick up the Lortel’s top musical prize; that laurel went to “Fun Home,” the Jeanine Tesori-Lisa Kron musical that played at the Public Theater earlier this season and will likely reappear on Broadway next season. Will Eno, overlooked by the Tonys for his play “The Realistic Joneses,” nabbed the outstanding play Lortel for “The Open House” at the Signature Theater.
The haul for “Here Lies Love” (pictured above) — which played an acclaimed nonprofit run at the Public prior to its current, commercial incarnation in the same theater — included one for helmer Alex Timbers, notably overlooked by the Tony committee for his staging of “Rocky.” The title also won for lead musical actress (Ruthie Ann Miles), lights (Justin Townsend), sound (M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer) and costumes (Clint Ramos), the later award shared with Paloma Young for her work on another immersive Off Broadway buzzmagnet, “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.”
“Great Comet” earned a total of three gongs, including featured musical actor (Lucas Steele) and set design (Mimi Lien). “Fun Home” also took home a trio of trophies, including lead musical actor (Michael Cerveris) and featured musical actress (Judy Kuhn).
“Buyer and Cellar,” the single-actor comedy that originally starred Michael Urie, took the prize for solo show.
The Lortel awards were handed out May 4 in a ceremony hosted by Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, current appearing Off Broadway in the New Group’s “Annapurna.”
