Olivia Newton-John diagnosed with cancer for 3rd time: 'I believe I will win'
Olivia Newton-John is battling cancer again, the Australian singer-actress revealed on Sunday, her third diagnosis in three decades.
The Grease star, who turns 70 this month, appeared on Australian TV and said that doctors found a tumor at the base of her spine in 2017.
Newton-John has decided to treat this cancer with modern medicine and natural remedies. She is also cutting sugar completely from her diet and taking cannabis oil for the pain.
“In California it’s legal to grow a certain amount of plants for your own medicinal purposes. So [my husband] makes me tinctures. It’s hard to say — they help with pain,” Newton-John noted.
She finds herself “lucky” to live in California and hopes that in her home country of Australia, medical marijuana laws will change. “My dream is that, in Australia soon, it will be available to all the cancer patients and people going through cancer that causes pain,” she said.
So far everything’s going “really well,” and she’s optimistic for the future. However, while the star put on a brave face during the interview, she revealed she does have her moments of despair but just wouldn’t be having them in front of the camera. “There are moments. I’m human. So if I allow myself to go there, I could easily create that, you know, big fear,” she said.
Newton-John’s third cancer diagnosis comes after she was first treated for the disease in 1992, after finding a lump on her right breast. The star has previously spoken about the shock of the diagnosis, which came on the same weekend that her father died from cancer. She underwent a partial mastectomy and six months of treatment.
In 2013, she was diagnosed with cancer in her shoulder after she was involved in a minor car accident. It came just months her sister, Rona, died from brain cancer.
Despite all the hardship, Newton-John is keeping a positive mind and believes there are people out there who are far worse off than her. “I live in this beautiful place. I have a wonderful husband. I have all the animals that I adore. I have an incredible career. I have nothing, really, to complain about,” she said. “My husband’s … always there to support me, and I believe I will win over it and that’s my goal.”
