How the Late Olivia Newton-John Helped Elle Macpherson Through Her Secret 7-Year Breast Cancer Journey

Australian supermodel and five-time Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover star Elle Macpherson recently revealed that she has been battling breast cancer for the past seven years and refused chemotherapy for it. To learn more about what the supermodel has to say, if she is in remission or not and how the late Olivia Newton-John helped, keep scrolling.

What to know about Elle Macpherson’s cancer journey

Macpherson was diagnosed with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) positive estrogen receptive intraductal carcinoma, which is a noninvasive form of breast cancer packed with high levels of estrogen that is mainly used to help spread cancer.

It was a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was daunting in so many ways,”  the supermodel told The Australian Women’s Weekly, having kept her diagnosis and treatment a secret for seven years. “It really gave me an opportunity to dig deep in my inner sense to find a solution that worked for me…I realized I was going to need my own truth, my belief system, to support me through it. And that’s what I did. So, it was a wonderful exercise in being true to myself, trusting myself and trusting the nature of my body and the course of action that I had chosen.”

In that same interview, Macpherson also revealed that she has chosen to opt out of chemotherapy and instead go for a much more natural approach.

Writes the Sports Illustrated cover star upcoming memoir elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, “I chose a holistic approach. Saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But saying no to my own inner sense would have been even harder.”

“People thought I was crazy, but I knew I had to make a choice that truly resonated with me. To me, that meant addressing emotional as well as physical factors associated with breast cancer. It was time for deep, inner reflection. And that took courage.”

The supermodel would spend the next seven years of her life battling cancer alongside her two kids, while also remaining very active on social media.

Says Macpherson: “In traditional terms, they’d say I’m in clinical remission, but I would say I’m in utter wellness. And I am. Truly, from every perspective, every blood test, every scan, every imaging test … but also emotionally, spiritually and mentally – not only physically. It’s not only what your blood tests say. It’s how and why you are living your life on all levels.”

The shocking way Olivia Newton-John helped Elle Macpherson

Aside from her holistic approach to healing, another way Macpherson was able to get through her cancer scare was with the help of the late Olivia Newton-John, who also battled breast cancer.

We spoke a few times when I was diagnosed and also through both of our healing journeys. We did things differently, but we did share experiences with each other and how we feel and how we approach things,” says Macpherson

Newton-John battled breast cancer for 30 years up until her death in 2022. Both her and Macpherson were Australian natives.

Now that she is on the tail end of her breast cancer battle, Macpherson wants nothing more to help out others.

I want to help and encourage others to follow their heart and give things a go … follow their heart in whatever they’re choosing to do, not just when in crisis but for decisions, big or small,” the supermodel said. “Learn to slow down and get very quiet and very still and feel what truly resonates with you without the outer distractions of everybody else’s opinions. It’s about using your heart as a compass in life.”
