Original Cast Debunks New Reports of a GOONIES 2 Sequel Movie
With legacy sequels all the rage, rumors have been floating around for years about a sequel to The Goonies These rumors picked up steam this week when several online reports surfaced that The Goonies 2 was already greenlit. Then, original The Goonies star Sean Astin added fuel to the fire when he posted this:
It’s our time.

However, at least for now, we have to throw some cold water on those rumors. Via Variety, we’ve learned that two original cast members have now debunked these reports of a Goonies 2 sequel movie. And they are letting the fans know via social media. The first cast member to speak up was Martha Plimpton, who said the following on Instagram:
People, there is no ‘Goonies 2’ script, there is no one ‘attached.’ Spielberg is not directing, it’s not real. What IS real is CHECK YOUR REGISTRATION AND VOTE!!!!
Original Goonies star and the ’80s most in-demand child actor Corey Feldman also posted that he’s that he had “no information” whatsoever of a Goonies sequel movie. So that’s now two original stars that are debunking this widely circulating story about Goonies 2. Next year will be the film’s 40th anniversary, so if ever there was a time to release it, 2025 would be the year. But it would have to be filming now for such a thing to happen. And that is simply not the case.
Rumors of a Goonies sequel picked up serious steam back in 2014. This was when Sean Astin said of a Goonies 2 movie, “I’m 1,000% certain there will be a sequel. I will bet my children on it.” But since then, original Goonies director Richard Donner has passed away. And Steven Spielberg has been focusing less on popcorn movies, and more serious fare. Also, the asking price of original actors like Ke Huy Quan and Josh Brolin has likely gone way up. With the big box office of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Top Gun: Maverick and other ’80s classics, you’d think Warner Bros. would be all over this. But alas, it seems Goonies 2 might be one that forever remains on our wish lists.
