Oscars Streaming Snafu Update: Hulu Apologizes for Technical Issues
For the first time, the Oscars streamed live on Hulu this year — or at least they were supposed to.
As the 97th Academy Awards kicked off on Sunday, Hulu subscribers took to the streamer’s support account on X to express their frustration over technical issues plaguing the feed. Some users complained that Hulu was completely down, while others received an error message. (This TVLine staffer, for one, got a black screen when clicking on Hulu’s Oscars feed.)

Even when the issue seemed rather resolved, there were reports that Hulu cut out, again, just before the final two winners were announced, for Best Actor and Best Picture.
After spending all of Sunday night responding to complaints via social media, the streamer on Monday morning acknowledged and apologized for the issue. “[On Sunday] evening, we experienced technical and live stream issues on Hulu which impacted some Oscars viewers. We apologize for the experience,” a Disney spokesperson said in a statement to our sister site Deadline. “A full replay of the event is available on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.” (TVLine has reached out to Disney/Hulu for additional comment.)
Not long into Sunday night’s Oscarcast, social media and the TVLine comments sections blew up with complaints about the Hulu stream.
“Well, I guess I’m not watching the Oscars this year. Thanks @hulu for your unusable garbage app,” wrote one frustrated viewer. Added another: “@hulu FIX YOUR SERVICE…. how are you going to advertise something and it be down????”

Hulu Support’s X account got busy with replies à la “Sorry for any upset! We’re currently investigating this behavior with a high priority, and we hope to have a fix in place soon. Thank you for your patience!”
Later in the telecast, Hulu Support offered, “Our developers were able to put changes in place to mitigate the interruption. Please reboot your device to start streaming, and let us know if you run into any further trouble.”
The year’s Oscars ceremony, hosted by Conan O’Brien, is airing on ABC. Those hoping to watch online needed to sign up for a live-TV streaming service that includes ABC, or subscribe to Hulu.
