‘Palm Royale’: 11 artisans celebrate their 2024 Emmy nominations at special FYC event [WATCH]
Gold Derby recently honored 11 of “Palm Royale’s” Emmy-nominated artisans at a special rooftop FYC event in Culver City, California. Those in attendance for the Apple TV+ comedy series were set decorator Ellen Reede, costume co-designer Leigh Bell, costume head of work room Valerie Keiser, hair designer Karen Bartek, makeup designer Tricia Sawyer, key makeup Marie DelPrete, composer Jeff Toyne, personal hair Jill Crosby, assistant department head hairstylist Brittany Madrigal, assistant department head makeup artist Marissa Lafayette, and creative director/designer Ronnie Koff. “Palm Royale” focuses on Kristen Wiig as Maxine, an outsider who dreams of breaking into Palm Beach’s high society in 1969. Wiig’s various high-profile co-stars include Ricky Martin as Robert Diaz, Josh Lucas as Douglas Darby Dellacorte-Simmons, Leslie Bibb as Dinah Donohue, Amber Chardae Robinson as Virginia, Laura Dern as Linda Shaw/Penelope Rollins, Allison Janney as Evelyn Rollins, and Carol Burnett as Norma Dellacorte. In all, the show received 11 nominations at the 2024 Emmys including Best Comedy Series.

SEECarol Burnett (‘Palm Royale’): Emmys episode submission revealed
Ellen Reede was “absolutely, incredibly excited and over the moon” to receive the nomination for production design. She submitted the third episode, “Maxine’s Like A Dellacorte,” on the Emmy ballot, in part because it “showed many of the sets that we thought were really epic sets,” including the mansion, the mid-century sets and the nail salon. Reede also goes into detail about Norma’s infamous “gun wall” and the artwork surrounding her bedroom.
Valerie Keiser and Leigh Bell admit it “takes quite a village” behind the scenes to get all of the costumes ready for airtime. There are about 25 people total in the department, including shoppers, made-to-order designers and heads of work room. They decided to submit the finale episode, “Maxine Throws A Party,” to Emmy judges, because it was filled with so much “extravagance,” including showgirls, mermaids, waitresses, etc. “All of the main cast were in beads head to toe … [there were] at least a hundred” costumes in that one episode, they reveal.

Karen Bartek, Jill Crosby and Brittany Madrigal celebrate their nomination in the hairstyling category for the fourth episode, “Maxine Rolls The Dice.” “It was hard to pick because they were all so good and there was so much in every single episode,” Bartek explains for the group. “Episode 4 had a big ball and then other stuff with Kristen and Allison, and then a few little changes here and there. And I just thought it was a fun episode.”
Marie DelPrete, Tricia Sawyer and Marissa Lafayette earned an Emmy bid in the non-prosthetic makeup race for the pilot episode, “Maxine Goes to Palm Beach.” They note how it’s “very exciting” to be working on such a well-received program that embraces a collaborative effort behind the scenes. “Everybody really brought their A-game and I feel like we really created something special,” Sawyer remarks. She submitted the pilot episode because of the way it gives the audience a “really good glimpse” of all of the main characters.
Jeff Toyne received a pair of nominations for Best Main Title Theme Music and Best Music Composition for a Series, and he reveals that the main theme only came about after he “found the themes for Maxine.” As he explains, “Her character to me was too big for just one theme, and in particular there was a moment in a scene in Episode 3 that really opened a door for the score … and that led to further development of the other themes for Maxine.”
Ronnie Koff readily admits that “Palm Royale” is a “great show” with a “great cast,” and that working on the main titles (watch below) was “just a joy.” The inspiration behind the intro’s design was “retro, Saul Bass, 60s,” he divulges. “A lot of it looks painted, it looks hand-made, optical. And so we really kind of played upon making it authentic to the era. The world of the show is so colorful and vibrant, so we wanted to take the title sequence into that frame of mind.”
