‘Palm Royale’ renewed for Season 2 by Apple

Apple TV+ wants to keep the caftans coming and has ordered up a second season of “Palm Royale,” the late ‘60s Florida-set society comedy starring Kristen Wiig, Laura Dern, Alison Janney, Josh Lucas, Ricky Martin, Leslie Bibb, Bruce Dern, and the nonagenarian Carol Burnett

With brutal competition for streaming comedies right now, Apple’s Matt Cherniss was eager to boast about the series breaking through with audiences. “‘Palm Royale’ has delighted global audiences and we are thrilled that viewers will have the opportunity to spend more time with this highly entertaining, iconic cast, from Kristen Wiig to the incomparable Carol Burnett,” he said in a statement.

Laura Dern, credited as one of the series producers, was also delighted, saying she and her partners “have been dreaming up this project for so long in hopes that audiences would have delicious fun with the radical ride that is the world of ‘Palm Royale’. We all can’t wait to get started [on season two].”

The series was created by Abe Sylvia, whose previous work includes “Nurse Jackie,” “Dead to Me” and the screenplay for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” which won Oscars for its Makeup and Hairstyling (naturally) and Jessica Chastain’s central performance. The show is inspired by the book “Mr. and Mrs. American Pie” by Juliet McDaniel

The Palm Beach 1969 setting of “Palm Royale” led Architectural Digest to call it “the most stylish show on television right now.” The inclusion of comedy legend Carol Burnett has delighted fans (as well as her co-stars) and seems like a natural for an Emmy nomination. Were she to win, the 91-year-old would be the oldest Emmy winner in history. Of course, any new trophies would join a shelf featuring seven other Emmys, a Grammy, a Tony, seven Golden Globes, the Mark Twain Prize for American Comedy, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
