‘Percy Jackson’ season 2 set to bring in fan-favorite character
SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — With another season of the hit Disney+ show “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” on the horizon, the cast and creative team have finally unveiled who is set to bring a fan-favorite character to life in the upcoming installment.
On Thursday in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con, Rick Riordan, the best-selling author of the television show’s source material, revealed that Canadian actor Daniel Diemer will be joining the cast in the role of “Tyson,” Percy Jackson’s cyclops half-brother.
Tyson is introduced in the second installment of Riordan’s “Percy Jackson” book series, “The Sea of Monsters,” which served as the basis for the upcoming season. He is described as a shy, awkward and endearing character who will help Percy as he ventures to save Camp Half-Blood.
“Daniel’s enthusiasm and talent can bring a whole new dimension to Tyson and it’s gonna be incredible to see him,” Rioridan said in a pre-recorded message shown during the Hall H panel. “I can’t wait for you guys to meet him and welcome him to the Percy Jackson universe.”
The highly anticipated season will bring the show’s hero back to Camp Half-Blood one-year after the events of the first season when everything in Percy’s life is in flux.
“His friendship with Annabeth is changing, he learns he has a cyclops for a brother, Grover has gone missing, and camp is under siege from the forces of Kronos,” a Disney television spokesperson said of the upcoming season. “Percy’s journey to set things right will take him off the map and into the deadly Sea of Monsters, where a secret fate awaits the son of Poseidon.”
According to Disney+, the show is slated to begin filming in Vancouver next week, yet a release date has not been announced. However, Leah Sava Jeffries, who plays Annabeth Chase, said on Thursday that the season will be some of the cast’s “best work” on the show so far.
Diemer, who is joining the cast as a series regular for the second season, recently starred in the Hulu limited series “Under the Bridge” and the soon-to-be-released indie film “Thug,” opposite Liam Neeson and Ron Perlman.
His breakout role was in the Netflix feature “The Half Of It,” from producer Anthony Bregman and director Alice Wu.
“I’m thrilled and honored to step into the extraordinary universe of ‘Percy Jackson,'” Diemer said in a pre-recorded message. “I’ve been a fan of the books since I was 10 years old and it’s a dream come true to be part of such an exciting adventure.”
The first season of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” which stars Walker Scobel as Percy Jackson, Jeffries as Annabeth Chase and Aryan Simhadri as Grover Underwood, is premiered on Disney+ last year.
