Is Peter Krause leaving 9-1-1?
While ABC nor Krause have confirmed his exit from 9-1-1, at the time of writing, he seemed to hint at Bobby’s death in Season 7 in an interview with The Wrap in March 2024 following Bobby and his wife Athena Grant’s honeymoon from hell. The storyline involved their cruise ship getting hijacked, exploding, and facing a Category 5 hurricane.

“As an audience member, you almost hope they die together,” Krause said. “I was filming it and thinking, ‘Let’s just Romeo and Juliet this thing right now.’ I know the show’s gotta go on, but we’re never going to be able to top this.” While Bobby and Athena, in fact, survived the deadly cruise, fans interpreted Krause’s comment about how Bobby should’ve died as a hint that the arc was his final life and the next time he faced a similar situation, he wouldn’t be as lucky.
That similar situation could be Bobby and Athena’s house fire in the 9-1-1 Season 7, Episode 9, “Ashes, Ashes.” In the episode, Bobby resigned as Station 118’s captain after he was confronted by Amir, a man whose family died in a Minnesota apartment fire Bobby caused a decade ago. After his incident with Amir, Bobby revealed to Athena that his plan was to commit suicide after saving 148 people as a firefighter, the same amount of lives lost in the fire he caused. “I’m not supposed to be here,” Bobby said.

The final scene of the episode showed Bobby dreaming about his alcoholic father. When he woke up, he realized that his and Athena’s house was on fire, with Athena unconscious in their bedroom. Bobby rescued Athena from their home, but just as they made it out safely, Bobby suffered a heart attack and fell unconscious, as fans wondered whether he would die. Though the Season 7 finale confirmed that Bobby survived and would return for Season 8, fans still have their theories that 9-1-1 could kill him off in the future.
It would make sense for 9-1-1 to write Bobby off. For one, Bobby’s confession to Athena that he wanted to save 148 people before he died would be a poetic way for 9-1-1 to kill him off if Athena was the last person he saved. Second, fans have suspected that 9-1-1 would write off one of its longtime characters ever since the series moved from FOX to ABC for Season 7.

9-1-1, which premiered on FOX in 2018, was cancelled by the network in May 2023. ABC saved it from cancellation and renewed it for a seventh season, which premiered in March 2024. A source told Deadline at the time that FOX cancelled 9-1-1 due to its high cost to produce the series at around $9 million to $10 million per episode. The magazine gave two main reasons for 9-1-1‘s high cost: the expensive visual effects and stunts used to re-create natural and man-made disasters, and the 9-1-1 cast’s expensive salaries, which have only increased since the show premiered.
According to a 2021 report by Deadline, Krause is the second highest-paid cast member on 9-1-1 at $300,000 per episode. The first is Angela Bassett, who plays Athena and makes $450,000 per episode. Given the high cost to produce 9-1-1, it makes sense that ABC is looking for ways to save money on the series, and one way could be to write off one of the highest-paid cast members: Krause.
Deadline also reported in January 2024 that Season 7 is often a make-or-break season for primetime shows because it’s when series regular actors often receive new contracts. The magazine reported that series regular actor contracts are typically for six years and extended to seven in a salary negotiation after Season 2 or 4, which means that many shows are faced with having to make new cast deals after Season 7 that could come with expensive salary increases.
That’s among the reasons why many shows — such as Young Sheldon, The Good Doctor, and SEAL Team — end after Season 7. While 9-1-1 was renewed for a Season 8, that renewal likely came with some serious financial decisions, which could’ve involved writing off Krause.
9-1-1 is available to stream on Hulu.
