Pharrell Returns To Hometown For Something In The Water 2023: Recap

During the final weekend in April, Pharrell’s Something In The Water Festival returned to Virginia Beach. The historic two-day affair featured performances by Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, Summer Walker, Jazmine Sullivan, Kehlani, UMI, Coi Leray, SWV, Latto, Machine Gun Kelly, Doechii, and more.

Regarding day two, Pharrell spearheaded his “& Friends” set alongside A$AP Rocky, Busta Rhymes, Spliff Star, De La Soul, M.I.A, Diddy, Chris Brown, Lola Brooke, and Latto. “It feels so good to be home, Virginia!,” he shared.

Ahead of the weekend, he reminded fans of his mission for Something In The Water. “It’s my dream for this festival to be across many different age demographics and not just cultural demographics,” said Pharrell. Though originally scheduled to span three days, the experience was cut short due to inclement weather.

The “Happy” artist issued a formal statement via Twitter. “Dearest Virginia, we are the best,” Pharrell tweeted. “These past few days have been the best. Even during this Tornado Watch and Lightning Storm right now as I type, we are the best. Thank you for giving the folks that travel here that energy and that LOVE that only we can give. Thank you to our partners, the vendors, production, policemen, firemen, the city council, the mayor and all who volunteered. The spirit here was felt everywhere! Next year we will shift the dates because this rain ain’t playing, but we will be! Next year, more acts, more merch, more food… just more! Continued blessings and favor to you all.”

The final night was supposed to include performances from Grace Jones, Clipse, Lil Uzi Vert, Wu-Tang Clan, Nile Rodgers & Chic, Aminé, Lil Durk, Flo Milli, and more. Refunds for 33% of the full weekend ticket cost are set to be issued.

After moving the festival to Washington D.C. last year during Juneteenth weekend following the murder of his cousin, Donovan Lynch, Pharrell returned to his hometown as the city reached a $3 million settlement with Lynch’s family in December 2022. Coincidentally, day one of the inaugural festival in 2019 was also canceled because of the weather.
