Is There A Possible ‘Love Jones’ Musical On The Way?
Nineteen years ago, moviegoers were introduced to the cult classic Love Jones. Starring Nia Long, Bill Bellamy, and Larenz Tate, the film tells the tale of an unsuspected love between Long’s attractive character, Nina Mosley, and Tate’s dashing persona of Darius Lovehall.
Written and directed by Theodore Witcher, the film became a fixture in pop culture and is a recurring favorite within the vault of iconic black films. Now, it looks like a 2016 adaptation of the beloved motion picture will hit a stage near you.
According to MC Lyte’s Instagram post, a musical version of the film is set to premiere this fall. A few names attached to the production include Marsha Ambrosius, Raheem DeVaughn, Musiq Soulchild, Chrisette Michele, Dave Hollister and the “Lyte as a Rock” MC herself.
During a stop on The Breakfast Club earlier this year, Tate shared that he and Long have discussed making a possible sequel. “She and I were saying it’s both a blessing and a curse. The blessing is that people still want to see that story continue,” he said. “The only curse is … if the script is not right. We’ve seen a couple scripts that just wasn’t right.”
