Tracker is going to look very, very different going into Season 2. The show, which stars Justin Hartley as Colter Shaw, a reward seeker who uses his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries, is losing a big character for its upcoming sophomore season – Teddi Bruin, Colter’s handler and friend. But why did Robin Weigert leave Tracker and what happens to Teddi now?

Why Did Robin Weigert Leave Tracker?

TVLine is reporting that Weigert will not return as Teddi Bruin for Season 2 of the drama. There’s no word yet on how her absence will be explained on screen, though considering Abby McEnany, who plays Teddi’s wife and Colter Shaw’s fellow handler Velma, is set to return, chances are the show cannot just pretend Teddi is in the bathroom every time Colter calls. And this is a show about missing people. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if the show turned Teddi’s disappearance into a season-long arc.

Just as we wouldn’t be surprised if that season-long arc ended up having a tragic end. The only other option is her packing up and leaving, which isn’t much better. But at least she’d be alive.

Showrunner Elwood Reid had previously teased to TVLine that Velma would be “taking on a very interesting role with something that was hinted at with Reenie’s character in the final couple episodes” of Season 1. That implies something new is coming for Velma outside of her relationship with Teddi, which is a good thing. But it might mean Reid was planning how to write out Weigert’s character for longer than fans thought. Abby McEnany did share most of her scenes with Weigert, so Season 2 presents a very different dynamic for Velma for the show to potentially explore.

More: Everything to know about Tracker Season 2

The show Tracker is based on the novel The Never Game by Jeffery Deaver. Season 1 fans saw Teddi and Velma help Shaw with different cases every week, helped by computer whiz Bobby (played by Eric Graise) and attorney Reenie (Fiona Rene). The series premiered on February 11, 2024. Tracker was recently renewed for Season 2.

In the background of the weekly cases, Colter also had to deal with family drama and a potential mystery involving his father. Season 1 introduced us to his brother Russell, his sister Dory, and his mother Mary, played by guest stars Jensen Ackles, Melissa Roxburgh, and Wendy Crewson respectively. Ackles has already been confirmed to return for Season 2.

Tracker is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
