‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Is Officially Happening: What We Know
It’s finally happening—Genovia’s Queen Mia Thermopolis is coming home for a third film in the Princess Diaries franchise! Anne Hathaway, who portrayed Mia Thermopolis in the first and second Princess Diaries films, confirmed the sequel in an Instagram post on Friday. See the Reel below:
What we know about ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ so far
Hathaway is currently the only confirmed original star set to return for the third movie with no word on Julie Andrews, who portrayed Queen Clarisse Renaldi. The film is also set to be directed by Adele Lim, the writer behind the Crazy Rich Asians (2018) screenplay.
“As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim shared about the announcement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The film will also be produced by Debra Martin Chase, the producer of The Princess Diaries in 2001, as well as The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement in 2004. The screenplay will be written by Flora Greeson.
Hathaway addressed rumors of the sequel back in April but couldn’t say much. “We’re in a good place. That’s all I can say. There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”
What is the plot of ‘The Princess Diares’ films?
Directed by Gary Marshall, The Princess Diaries follows shy teen Mia Thermopolis who learns she comes from royalty and is an actual princess in the small land of Genovia.
Mia is the heir to the crown, currently held by her strict grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi, and must learn how to act like a princess before she takes over the crown. The 2001 movie also stars Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, Robert Schwartzman and Héctor Elizondo.
The plot of the second movie explores Mia’s life after graduating from Princeton. She returns to Genovia but learns from her grandmother that she cannot become the Queen unless she marries in 30 days.
There are no details available for the plot of the third movie yet, but it is expected to continue the story from the first and second films, rather than reboot and redo the classic tale.
What ‘The Princess Diaries’ cast has said about a reboot
While there has been no word on who of the original cast will be returning for the third film, a few have spoken on the possibility of a reboot before. When asked in 2022, Andrews shared she wasn’t sure the project was a possibility.
“I think we know that it’s probably not going to be possible,” Andrews said. “It was talked about very shortly after two came out, but it’s now how many years since then? And I am that much older and Annie the princess, or queen, is so much older. And I am not sure where it would float or run.
But now that the third film is officially happening, everyone is hopeful Andrews will return. Héctor Elizondo also shared his thoughts about a potential third film back in 2016, sharing who he would like to see in the director’s chair.
“I’d love it to be a woman [director],” Elizondo explained. “We don’t have enough of them. That would be nice. First, you have to have a good story. Whoever directs it has to understand the story.”
And it seems Elizondo’s wish will come true with Lim stepping in. As for a release date, nothing is known yet, but as we all know, “A Queen is never late, everyone else is simply early.”
