Punch Addresses Speculation About Ab-Soul Dissing J. Cole in New Song "Squeeze 1st 2"
Punch is denying rumors that Ab-Soul took shots at J. Cole on the new song, “Squeeze 1st 2.”
On Monday, Punch responded to an X user who tweeted, “Ab-Soul threw jabs at J. Cole after Cole did him dirty by adding him & Daylyt to a song with a verse dissing Kendrick on ‘Pi’ - this is a question for rap fans. Cole dropped out with Kendrick but he still claims his pen is unmatched. Does he have to engage w Soul to prove it?”
Punch wrote, “I hate to clear up rumors, I usually let them fester and see how far they go, but ALL verses on ‘Pi’ were recorded long before Like That."
In a follow-up tweet, the TDE president added, “When an emcee is in his or her ‘I’m the best’ bag, they’re usually dissing everyone and no one at the same time. It’s a part of the motif for most emcees. The lines are usually open ended and can apply to any other rapper. Unless it’s a specific reference.”
On Friday, Ab-Soul shared “Squeeze 1st 2,” which, according to Genius, includes some veiled references to Cole. On the same day, the Dreamville head dropped off his new song, “Port Antonio,” in which he addresses his departure from Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef. Cole raps, "I pulled the plug because I've seen where that was 'bout to go / They wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make they pockets grow."
According to online speculation, Ab is seen as dissing Cole for ducking out of the feud in the first verse of “Squeeze 1st 2.” Ab raps, “Metasota warned me they wanna war / But actually they forfeiting.”
The Soul and Daylyt-featuring song “Pi,” which the original poster mentioned, is from Cole’s recent project, Might Delete Later. It arrived in April; "Like That" arrived in March, though, as Punch points out, Ab-Soul wrote his "Pi" verse before "Like That" was recorded. Might Delete Later also spawned Cole's explosive Kenny diss, "7 Minute Drill."
After J. Cole let loose “Port Antonio,” a song where he's contemplating his choice to distance himself from the early tensions between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, he caught flak from Joe Budden.
During a rencent episode of The Joe Budden Podcast, the former rapper heavily criticized Cole's new track. Budden wasn’t impressed with it, feeling that Cole was trying to pretend he didn’t want to engage in any beef, despite having played a key role in sparking the whole situation.
