Queens Reigned Supreme At BET Experience – Roots Picnic: Hip-Hop is The Love of My Life
The BET Experience – Roots Picnic: Hip-Hop is The Love of My Life event united Hip-Hop veterans at the Hollywood Bowl on Saturday night (June 29) as part of the network’s weekend of events leading to the 2024 award show. The outdoor event gathered thousands of fans of the legacy acts to rap along to their favorite throwback jams performed live on stage, as well as two-step to modern tunes blaring from the DJ booth. A sold-out crowd cheered on, most remaining standing for the duration of the show, as the rap veterans proved that their talent remains pristine.
“It’s been a long time coming to bring this dream to life,” shared Questlove, per Los Angeles Daily News.
Most of the 1990s Native Tongues collective took center stage at points throughout the affair, with performers including Black Sheep, Jungle Brothers, Monie Love, and Queen Latifah. The Roots opened the showcase and were joined by Digable Planets, and then Common.
Arguably, the night’s top moment came when concert headliner Queen Latifah was joined on stage by Monie Love, Yo-Yo-, Lady of Rage, and MC Lyte, where they collectively served as one another’s stage support while performing collaborative and solo tracks. The set included “All Hail the Queen,” “Afro Puffs,” “Ladies First,” “Monie In The Middle,” “I Wanna Be Down Remix,” “You Can’t Play With My Yo-Yo,” and “Paper Thin” before closing with “U.N.I.T.Y.”
Additional performers included The Pharcyde, Arrested Development, Pete Rock, and more.
The entire historic affair closed with every performer on stage, as Black Sheep rocked an energetic performance of “The Choice Is Yours” with everyone at the outdoor venue delivering a loud, standing ovation.
The Roots are set to head on the Hip-Hop is The Love of My Life Tour with Digable Planets, Arrested Development, and guests later this summer. Stops include Houston, Atlanta, Boston, and more.
