Record Store Day’s Adapter Inaugural Prize Winners Include Tame Impala, Postal Service, GZA, Rodriguez
The Record Store Day coalition has named the recipients for its first-ever Adapter prize, so named after specially designed 45 adapters presented to winners.
Tame Impala’s “Lonerism,” on the Modular and distributed by INgrooves, picked up record of the year; while the Postal Service’s “Give Up,” on Sub Pop and distributed by the Alternative Distribution Alliance, was named re-issue of the year.

In addition, Adapter Awards were presented to GZA for his “Liquid Swords Chess Box,” on the Get On Down label distributed by Traffic Entertainment; while Rodriguez was named the breakout artist of the year.
The winners were picked from releases that came out in between May 1, 2012 and April 30, 2013, which were nominated by store employees and customers of stores that signed up to participate, with the final vote on the nominations being left for store employees.
Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, in a statement, labeled his award awesome because, “we know you record store folk know your shit and wouldn’t hand this title out to just anyone, so this means a lot!”
In reaction to his label’s GZA title picking of the RSD release of the year Adapter award, Get On Down Records co-founder Matt Welch said, “We would like to send an Extra Large shout out to all the indie shops out there that are the back bone of the vinyl resurgence and keeping the wind at our backs to keep creating forward thinking projects.”
Record Store Day is managed by the Department of Record Stores and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores, the Coalition of Independent Music Stores and honors independent record retailers on the third Saturday in April with in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases.
