Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito married in January 1982 and have three children together
Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito have been by each other’s side for over 50 years.
Pearlman and DeVito first began dating in 1971 and eventually got married on Jan. 28, 1982. Since then, they have welcomed three children together: Lucy Chet DeVito, Grace Fan DeVito, and Jacob Daniel DeVito.
In addition to supporting other’s careers, they have also shared the screen a number of times, including playing a couple on the television series Taxi and in the 1996 film Matilda.
Over the years, they have also been candid about the highs and lows they've faced in their relationship. They first announced their separation in October 2012 after 30 years of marriage and over 40 years together, but later reconciled in March 2013. The two separated again in March 2017 but remain married.
“We are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us," Perlman said of their relationship status during Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Wiser Than Me podcast in June 2023.
Here’s everything to know about Perlman and DeVito’s union.
Rhea Perlman met Danny DeVito after seeing a friend in a play
Perlman first met DeVito in 1971 at an off-Broadway play called The Shrinking Bride. Perlman had gone to see her friend in the performance, but couldn’t keep her eyes off DeVito.
“I had to meet him immediately,” she recalled to The New York Post. “I asked my friend if he had a girlfriend and she said no.” After the show, they went out for dinner, with Perlman adding, “I came on to him big time!” A few weeks later, she moved into his Manhattan apartment.
They got married in 1982
After dating for over a decade, the two tied the knot on Jan. 28, 1982. Their wedding came about a year before DeVito’s hit series Taxi came to a close and months before Perlman’s big break on Cheers.
They have three children together
Throughout the course of their union, Perlman and DeVito welcomed three children together. They welcomed their first child, Lucy, in 1983, one year after their wedding. They welcomed a second daughter, Grace, in 1985 followed by a son, Jake, in 1987.
“I have three great kids and they were raised here in Hollywood. They went to school in the valley. They’re great, great kids,” DeVito previously told Uproxx of his family. He added that his children have also showed interest in the arts like he and Perlman.
“Lucy was always the actress. I mean, even in kindergarten, grade school,” he explained. “And Jake did music, all kinds, was a movie buff, loved the movies. They all went to different colleges. Gracie, my middle daughter, is a painter. She’s an artist.”
Their daughter is an actress
Perlman and DeVito’s oldest daughter Lucy is an actress in her own right. After developing an interest in acting at a young age, she went to Brown University in Rhode Island and graduated with a degree in theater before heading back to Hollywood.
In addition to sharing the screen with her father on a few projects, including a cameo on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, she has also appeared on Melissa & Joey, Deadbeat and Jumanji: The Next Level.
They raised their kids to celebrate their Catholic and Jewish upbringing
Coming from mixed religious backgrounds — with Perlman being Jewish and DeVito being raised Catholic — the actress told the Los Angeles Times that they raised their children to celebrate their mixed background.
“Our kids are not Jewish, and they’re not Catholic. They’re not Episcopalian. They’re not Buddhist. They’re not anything,” she told the publication. “We do all the holidays to keep the traditions and the culture going, but I truly don’t have a great feeling about any particular organized religion, and I don’t think it’s right to impose one on my kids. I feel like I’m bringing them up to be good people, and that’s what it’s about.”
They’ve shared the screen on many occasions
Perlman and DeVito have worked together on several projects over the years. Most notably, they played a couple on the hit TV series Taxi from 1978 to 1983. They also played onscreen husband and wife in the 1996 film Matilda, which was an adaptation of Roald Dahl’s novel of the same name.

They are grandparents
In 2023, Perlman and DeVito became first-time grandparents. Perlman revealed the exciting news during an appearance on the podcast Wiser Than Me with Julia Louis-Dreyfus. When asked about the best part of being her age, Perlman said, "that my children have grown, and one of them had a grandchild.”
"It just happened seven weeks ago," she revealed. "It's amazing. Everybody said it'll change your life when you have a grandchild, and it does."
Although she did not reveal which of her and DeVito's three children became a parent, she said they welcomed a baby girl, whose name is Sinclair Lucille DeVito, with Perlman noting, "They kept the name DeVito even though she's married and her husband is not DeVito, but that's what they chose."
They live separately but are still very close
After 30 years of marriage, Perlman and DeVito announced their separation in October 2012 but later reconciled in March 2013. The two separated again in March 2017 but remain married.
Perlman clarified her relationship status with DeVito during her appearance on Louis-Dreyfus' Wiser Than Me podcast, stating that they are “still married” and don’t plan on getting divorced. “We are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us."
"I'm not gonna sugarcoat it — it was difficult," Perlman said of the "big shift" in her dynamic with DeVito. "It was very difficult at first. And there were a lot of reasons that we separated, which I'm not gonna go into. But it took time for us to come to this somehow pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other."
She also noted that she lives alone with her dog, which she said is "my partner in life now."
DeVito previously told PEOPLE in 2019 that he and Perlman have remained “very close" through the years. “We’re friends,” said the actor. “We’re happy. Everybody’s happy.”
They are super supportive of each other
Both Perlman and DeVito have shown their support for one another over the years. “Danny and I have always loved each other and we have three amazing children together," Perlman said of her relationship with DeVito in 2019. "We really agree on almost everything important."
In addition to supporting one another in their personal lives, they have also championed each other’s careers. Perlman has been by DeVito’s side for a handful of his movie premieres, including 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level, while DeVito recently gave Perlman a shoutout at the 75th Emmy Awards while presenting with his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia costars.
As the cast joked about never receiving an Emmy nomination for the show, DeVito noted how he previously won an Emmy for Taxi, while Perlman won four Emmys for Cheers, causing the actress to erupt in laughter in the audience.
