‘Ride Along 2’ Rides Up to No. 2 on Disc Sales Chart

Twentieth Century Fox’s “The Revenant” remained the top-selling disc for the second consecutive week, holding on to the No. 1 spot on the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart for the week ended May 1.
But Walt Disney Studios’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” regained the top spot on the Blu-ray Disc chart, bumping “The Revenant” – which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a rugged frontiersman who squares off against a bear who mauled him and a confidant who betrayed him – to No. 2.
A new release, “Ride Along 2,” from Universal Pictures, bowed at No. 2 on the overall disc sales chart (and No. 3 on the Blu-ray Disc chart). The film, which earned $90.9 million in U.S. theaters, is a sequel to the 2014 original and features returning stars Ice Cube and Kevin Hart in a series of fast-paced, comedic misadventures.
The No. 3 spot on the overall disc sales chart went to “The Force Awakens,” while “Krampus,” an inventive monster movie from Universal Pictures with a box office gross of $42.7 million, debuted at No. 4 on both charts.
Rounding out the top five, also on both charts, was Anchor Bay’s “The Hateful Eight.”
A third new release, “Jane Got a Gun,” debuted at No. 9 on the overall disc sales chart and No. 13 on the Blu-ray Disc chart. The Western drama stars Natalie Portman as a frontierswoman fighting a gang of brutal outlaws.
In the wake of singer Prince’s death, “Purple Rain,” his 1994 musical, reappeared on the sales chart at No. 11.
According to NPD data, “The Revenant” generated 49% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, down from 52% its first week in stores.
Among the new releases, “Krampus” was 53% Blu-ray Disc, more than “Ride Along 2” (44%) and “Jane Got a Gun” (31%).
On Home Media Magazine’s weekly rental chart, Warner’s “Point Break” remake shot to No. 1 now that its month-long holdback from Redbox is over. “Sisters,” from Universal Pictures, slipped to No. 2 after two weeks in the top chart position. Paramount’s “Daddy’s Home” was No. 3 for the third consecutive week, while “The Force Awakens” slipped to No. 4 (from No. 2) and Lionsgate’s “Norm of the North” slid to No. 5 (from No. 4).
