Rob Lowe Recalls Getting Busted by Cops With Michael J. Fox
Rob Lowe and Michael J. Fox may not come off as a couple of lawbreakers, but the duo did stir up a bit of trouble nearly four decades ago.
While appearing on a recent episode of Ted Danson's Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast, the 9-1-1: Lone Star actor remembered a sticky situation he and Fox got themselves in back in the '80s.
"There was a bus tour through California for Prop 65, which was about cleaning up our water system, and everybody on the planet was on it,” Lowe shared during the Aug. 28 episode.
“But there were two different buses," he continued, explaining that the one he and the Back to the Future alum were riding in was stopped by police at one point on the 1986 trip.
"We got pulled over for speeding," Lowe recalled. "But also because Michael J. Fox and I were smoking pot out of the top of the Greyhound bus roof."
The 60-year-old actor later explained to Danson that he and Fox "had the top emergency hatch off" while they were smoking.
"The cop pulled us over and it was like a clown car," he joked, before revealing several other A-list names that were apparently passengers on the bus, telling listeners: "Out came Whoopi Goldberg, Cher, Judd Nelson, Michael J. Fox, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Robert Downey Jr., Jane Fonda, Danny Glover.”
While the Parks and Recreation star didn't get into detail about what happened after the bus was stopped, he has been very vocal about his sobriety journey in the years since, even touching on it in part of his interview with Danson, 76.
"I got sober a year before [I got married] and you know as they say when you're really getting sober, don't do anything major in the first year, so I didn't," Lowe shared.
"So I had a year of sobriety under my belt and then I proposed to her [Sheryl Berkoff] and we got married," he continued, explaining that he knew he wanted to marry his now-wife of over 30 years, but that he wanted to be sober first.
"At least 70 percent of why I got sober was realizing if I couldn't make it work with her–and I wanted to–I wasn't going to be able to make it work with anybody."
