Rufus Wainwright and more inspire new Dance Kaleidoscope 2024-25 season

The stages of dreaming and a Rufus Wainwright comment are among the inspiration for works on Dance Kaleidoscope's 2024-25 season. From October through early June, the company will bring in guest choreographers and perform several world premieres.

The season's opening concert will include a piece by Artistic Director Emeritus David Hochoy. The season will close with a popular work by current Artistic Director Joshua Blake Carter set to the music of Brandi Carlile.

Here are the four mainstage shows. Subscriptions are on sale now, and individual tickets will be available starting Sept. 8. They can be purchased at dancekal.org.

'Late Night Tales'

Oct. 18-20 at Indiana Repertory Theatre, 140 W. Washington St.

Hochoy, the company's artist director emeritus, will return to choreograph "Rhapsody in Blue" 100 years after its premiere. Choreographer Sean Aaron Carmon, who has performed in the Broadway production of "La Cage aux Folles" and with Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, will work with Dance Kaleidoscope on a world premiere. Artistic Director Joshua Blake Carter has developed a series of short works inspired by the stages of dreaming.

Leadership changes: 5 retiring arts leaders are leaving a huge legacy. Here's what they built and what's next.

'Nothing is Forever, Darling'

Jan. 17-19, 2025, at Schrott Center for the Arts at Butler University, 610 W. 46th St.

On the program is a 2009 work by Carter that was inspired by singer-songwriter Wainwright's comment about his future with a lover. The company also will perform Carter's "Shaker Loops," set to a score by composer John Adams.

'Emerge'

March 14-16, 2025, at the Tobias Theater at Newfields, 4000 Michigan Road

The program includes a work by the winner of the company's Jaffee & Hall Emerging Choreographer Award and Stuart Lewis' modern retelling of "Romeo & Juliet," titled "Sweet Sorrow."

'Under the Covers'

May 30-June 1, 2025, at the Tobias Theater

Choreographer Autumn Eckman will spend time working with the company on a world premiere, and dancers will perform a new work by Carter that examines the elements of human relationships behind closed doors. The program also includes "Stories from the Corner Bar," a piece that uses the work of Brandi Carlile.
