Russell Westbrook's New Jordan Sneakers Are All About 'Owning the Chaos'
Jordan Brand just announced the release of Russell Westbrook's second performance sneaker, the Why Not Zer0.2, and it's as bold and brash as you'd expect from the famously fashion-forward NBA MVP. The debut colorway, "Future History," features a riot of colors, patterns, and textures, all of which are meant to evoke formative moments in Westbrook's career. Westbrook calls his particular style of gameplay "owning the chaos." Seems he brought that same mentality to his newest kicks.
"Every colorway has a meaning behind it that is special to me," Westbrook said in a statement to Nike. "With the Why Not Zer0.2, I wanted to take that storytelling to the next level with an exposed tag that helps illustrate the meaning behind the colors used." You'd probably need to do a little digging to figure out what means what, but the overall effect is immediate: These shoes demand attention.
But they're not just about looks. The Why Not Zer0.2 is, first and foremost, built for basketball. "From the first design meeting we had, my number one priority was making the best performance basketball shoe possible. I knew that if it was authentic to me then it would come out great," Westbrook says. "That’s what the Why Not? mentality is all about: Doing you regardless of what people think and being confident in who you are."
In an interesting move, the shoes are also being released in a full run of kids' sizes. "Being a father, it was important to have my signature shoe available in full family sizing. You don’t see that often with performance shoes but for me it’s all about inspiring the next generation," Westbrook says. "That also means making the shoe affordable and accessible to people all around the world."
There's no official word on pricing just yet, but men's sizes for the Why Not Zer0.2 release on January 10, with more sizes to follow later this month. Mark your calendar.
