Russell Wilson Believes God Gave Him A Responsibility To Care For Stepson Future

Russell Wilson’s latest season with the Denver Broncos may not have gone the way he and the team hoped, but life is good nonetheless. The 35-year-old quarterback discussed his marriage with Ciara and raising their children together, calling the experience a “gift.”

The Super Bowl champion joined I Am Athlete on Monday (Feb. 26) and spoke about his mindset going into his relationship with the “One, Two Step” singer. “Right before I met [Ciara], I wrote out my five non-negotiables,” he said, outlining how he wanted a woman who had a relationship with God, was independent and would care for him the way his mother cared for his father while he was on his deathbed.

“And so I prayed about that […] I wrote it out actually on a napkin at dinner,” he said. “Three days later I meet [Ciara]. When I walked in the room and saw little Future, who was 9 months at the time, and he crawls in my lap […] it was like, ‘This is going to be my responsibility.’”

Wilson recalled a conversation he had with God afterward, where it was reiterated that being a partner and father to Future — son of Ciara’s ex-boyfriend, rapper Future — was going to be his responsibility. He asked God for clarity that this was what he wanted, and The Lord said it was for him.

The hosts asked if he was scared to take that on and he replied, “Not scary, but it was also an opportunity. Like, ‘Okay God, this is what you want me to do?’ Stepping in to raise a child with [Ciara] and realizing that, ‘Okay God, I know she’s the one for me.’ But also too, I’m gonna take this responsibility as well.” He believed that he was ready for it and nine years later, they haven’t missed a beat. “What a gift,” he said.

Wilson and Ciara got married in 2016. Together, they had three children in 2017, 2020, and 2023, making four total including stepson Future. While their relationship is lauded by the public, it has also been the subject of disses from Future Hendrix.

“Big dawg status, bill hopper/ I ball in his mall for my brothers/ Goyard bag, tote the cutter/ I got it out the field, f**k Russell,” he rapped on Quavo’s “Turn Yo Clic Up” back in July 2023.
