Ryan Reynolds reveals how ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ honored co-star Rob Delaney’s late 2-year-old son

Ryan Reynolds is getting candid on the touching tribute in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

The 47-year-old recently shared on social media that if audiences stay through the film’s credits, they will notice that the threequel is dedicated to his co-star Rob Delaney’s late son Henry, who died in 2018 at age 2 from cancer.

“There’s more to @robdelaney than some realize. He’s one of the most subversively funny people I know. He’s a beautiful, acerbic and vulnerable writer,” Reynolds explained in his Instagram caption on Monday.

“If you stayed through the credits of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ you might notice a credit saying, ‘For Henry Delaney.’ Henry was Rob’s son. And Rob lost his little boy to a brain tumor in 2018. Right as we finished ‘Deadpool 2.’”

Delaney played Wade’s best friend Peter, also known as Sugarbear, in the movie’s second installment, and the “Spirited” star noted that he has “always kicked my own ass because I didn’t place a tribute to Henry over the end credits of DP2.”

But after making up for it with a nod to the toddler in the “Deadpool & Wolverine” credits, Reynolds knows Henry’s name has reached millions of eyes.

“If there’s a bright side, even more people are seeing Henry’s name in the credits of ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’” he continued. “And at long last, father and son are sharing the same screen.”

The “If” star then touched on Delaney’s memoir “A Heart That Works,” which grapples with life and death, sharing that “Rob has a vivid perspective on unimaginable grief.”

“And he takes an unfiltered, rage-ful, loving, sad and hilarious (yes, HILARIOUS) look at grief through his book, ‘A HEART THAT WORKS.’ It’s an incredible piece of writing which explores the kaleidoscopic colours of emotion Henry’s passing revealed,” Reynolds wrote. “I’m lucky to know Rob. And I’m lucky to have friends willing to put themselves on the line to make others feel less alone.”

In 2016, Delaney announced that Henry was diagnosed with a brain tumor shortly after his first birthday. After undergoing surgery to remove the tumor in 2017, the cancer returned, and he passed away on Delaney’s birthday in January 2018.

Four years later, Delaney wrote “A Heart That Works” in 2022.

Delaney appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” that same year and explained that he wanted to “bridge that gap between something that many people would, rightfully, consider unimaginable and Regular Joes just walking down the street, whistling, not knowing what that stuff is like.”

When he first began writing the book, the “Northern Comfort” star, 47, was “very angry,” but his perspective changed as he got further into the process.

“I was like, ‘I want to hurt people, you know? I want to pummel people. Somebody went to the bookstore for entertainment? Well, they deserve to be punished by my book about my sadness and my anger,’” Delaney admitted to Colbert. “And then, over time, it just became more and more about love. So it was very educational for me.”

And in the years since, Delaney has continued to be vocal about his grief since losing Henry.

“6 years ago today the little guy looking at us from the box was getting ready to die. He had a little less than a week left,” he wrote on Instagram in January. “I’ve wanted to say that – since writing the book about Henry – the volume of letters and messages I’ve gotten from other bereaved parents and siblings is completely unbelievable. It feels very strange to not be able to reply to all of them. One, there are only so many hours in the day and I have alive children and an alive wife to spend time with.”

Delaney added reason No. 2 was because “meaningfully engaging with the massive emotions surrounding children’s deaths all the time would probably kill me.”

“But I want to say hello to all the bereaved parents and siblings who have written me and say that I love you. And doesn’t it feel good and right to write about your dead child? To say their name? To see it written down and send it off to someone else? To parent your child in some way, even though their body is gone?” he concluded. “You love them. And they love you. Finally, I wrote a book about grief but it didn’t make me an expert. Just another meatball trudging along, making between 8-12 mistakes each day.”

Delaney and his wife, Leah, welcomed two sons together before Henry’s arrival in 2015. Leah was pregnant with their fourth son before Henry died, welcoming him in August 2018.
