Sam Smith's 'bloated and gross' selfie wins praise from fans: ‘I just see a beautiful body’
Sam Smith is celebrating being perfectly imperfect.
A flight to Brazil, where he’s performing this week, left the "Dancing with a Stranger" singer feeling “bloated and gross,” he shared on Instagram. So instead of getting into a funk over it, as he has said he tends to do, he embraced it with some selfies of his bod, and a one-man dance party in his hotel suite.
Smith — who recently got real about his body image, ongoing depression and sexuality in an interview with Jameela Jamil — shared a photo from the loo, writing, “Feeling bloated and gross after my flight so thought I’d post a mirror selfie of my sexy bloated boobies coz we are friends. Finally.”
In subsequent stories, he did what he dubbed the “bloat dance.”
And that took him out of the bathroom — and out of his shorts. He then catwalked (á la Britney) down the hallway.
And did his own “Bond girl” casting.
Smith embracing his body so publicly won heaps of praise from his followers. The selfie post had overwhelmingly positive comments, “What boobies? I just see a beautiful body,” wrote one person. “Confidence looks so good on you,” posted another. “God I just love everything about you so much,” wrote another person.
Some well-known followers also weighed in, including Nicole Scherzinger, who put “YOU ARE PERFECTION.” Singer Parson James wrote, “I envy this beautiful bloat. U is kind. U is smart. U is important. u look amazing babe!!!” Nyle DiMarco called him “BLOUTIFUL.” Anorexia survivor Gina Susanna noted, “Soft bodies give good hugs.”
Jamil’s I Weigh handle posted, “Yes Sam” with a bunch of flames. It was Smith’s interview with The Good Place actress that helped him turn a corner in his long struggle with body image, which he said started as an overweight child. During the chat, he revealed that he had liposuction at 12 because he “fully had breasts.” He admitted that his inner war with his body, which is ongoing, sometimes takes him to a “very dark” place. Smith also opened up about his sexuality, saying that when he first heard of genderqueer/non-binary, those who don’t identify with being male or female, he immediately identified with it. He said he floats “somewhere in between.”
