Sammy Hagar's Phoenix setlist, from 'I Can't Drive 55' to 'Panama'

He promised the Best of All Worlds.

And Sammy Hagar did his best to live up to that promise when his summer 2024 tour hit Phoenix, treating fans at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Tuesday, Aug. 20, to more than two straight hours of career highs spanning slightly more than 50 years, from Montrose through a smattering of highlights from his solo years to his four-album stretch as the voice of Van Halen.

By the time he’d been on stage an hour, he was midway through his 10th Van Halen song, “Best of Both Worlds,” at the helm of an all-star band — Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony, introduced as his partner in crime, Joe Satriani on guitar, Jason Bonham on drums, and Rai Thistlethwayte on keys.

The only solo song we heard in that first hour was “There’s Only One Way to Rock,” which made a solid case for only rocking that way.

Hagar hasn’t focused this much on Van Halen since they parted company in Tucson, Arizona, after one last chance to drive each other crazy on their ill-fated 2004 reunion tour.

Ten of the concert’s first 11 songs were by Van Halen. By the time Hagar said goodnight with “When It’s Love,” we’d heard the singer and his bandmate do no fewer than 15 Van Halen songs, including three crowd-pleasing highlights from before he joined in 1985.

That still left time for five songs from his solo years, from the heartfelt power ballad “Eagles Fly” to “Heavy Metal” and the signature song of his solo career, “I Can’t Drive 55, a song he did with Chickenfoot and “Space Station #5” from the album that launched his career as the voice of Montrose.
