Samuel Goldwyn Films Gets Into ‘Spirit Of The Game’
Just in time for the NBA playoffs, Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired worldwide rights to the faith-based drama Spirit of the Game, with plans for theatrical release in partnership with Purdie Distribution. Inspired by the so-called Mormon Yankees, groups of Mormon missionaries who used Basketball to evangelize in Australia from the 1930s through the early 60s, the film follows a squad who played exhibition games against Australia’s fledgling National Basketball Team as they prepared for the 1956 Olympics. The story also examines Australia’s post-World War II experience. Starring Kevin Sorbo, it’s written and directed by J.D. Scott and produced by Kate Whitbread, Spencer McLaren and Steve Jaggi.
