Scarlett Johansson pushes for all-female Marvel movie: 'It's something that audiences want'
Captain Marvel star Brie Larson revealed last week that several of the leading women in the Marvel Cinematic Universe approached Marvel boss Kevin Feige to plea for an all-female ensemble from the superhero powerhouse.
At the press junket for her new film Jojo Rabbit, first lady of the MCU Scarlett Johannson confirmed to Yahoo Entertainment that she was part of that squad and shed more light on the discussion, which took place at Marvel's 10-year anniversary celebration in Atlanta in early 2018 (watch above).
"It was so powerful for all of us female superheroes to be together because we don't always crossover, and here we were amongst all these incredible actresses that we've admired for so long," Johansson explained. "It just felt like the right move to approach Kevin with this, and he was very excited about it of course." (On Tuesday, Feige’s role was expanded from head of Marvel Studios to chief creative officer of all things Marvel.)
Involving Johansson's Black Widow/Natasha in such a film would, of course, be tricky, given Natasha perished in true Hero's Death fashion in April's box-office behemoth Avengers: Endgame. And while she’ll finally get her own standalone film, the 2020 prequel Black Widow, Johansson has professed overwhelming sadness over Natasha's demise. Still, the 34-year-old actress is publicly fighting the good fight for an all-female MCU adventure, with or without her.
"I think it's something that audiences want, I certainly want [it]," she said. "It's more opaque for me, obviously, because of my character's fate. But I'm 100 percent all for it, I think it would be fantastic."
As evidence, Johansson pointed to the memorable sequence in Endgame where several of the MCU's heroines, including Captain Marvel (Larson), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), Okoye (Danai Gurira), Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), form a united front on the battlefield.
"[It] was such a huge moment for the audience," she said. "It was just like, 'Yes, make this a film.'"
Jojo Rabbit opens Friday. Watch the trailer:
