Seacoast Jazz Society presents the Daniela Sch?chter Quintet at The Music Hall Lounge Sept. 29

PORTSMOUTH — The Seacoast Jazz Society and The Music Hall are co-presenting a jazz performance by the Daniela Sch?chter Quintet on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 6-7:45 p.m. at The Music Hall Lounge in Portsmouth, N.H.

Five outstanding jazz musicians who have each achieved international recognition for their musicianship will perform a mix of original compositions and jazz standards arranged in a contemporary style.

Daniela Sch?chter is the leader of the quintet. She is a pianist, vocalist, composer, and Berklee College of Music professor Daniela Sch?chter, who started her musical career performing in Italy before moving to Boston to study with Joe Lovano and others at Berklee and perform throughout the country. Among the many outstanding musicians with whom she has worked are Randy Brecker, John Clayton Jr. and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the New York Voices, Terri Lyne Carrington, Regina Carter, Christian McBride, Patti Austin, Ingrid Jensen, Shirley Horn, the Count Basie Big Band, and others. Daniela has won numerous prestigious awards such as the Mary Lou Williams Jazz Piano Competition and Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Competition. Her fourth album, “Vanheusenism: A Tribute To Jimmy Van Heusen,” was released in October 2016.

Performing with Daniela are four other outstanding jazz artists:

Jason Palmer is an internationally recognized trumpet player and Berklee faculty member who won first place in the 2009 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, was named among Downbeat’s Top 25 Trumpeters of the Future, and has recorded 16 albums as a leader and performed on over 100 recordings with musicians including Roy Haynes, Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Grace Kelly, Maria Schneider, Ravi Coltrane, Allison Miller, Lee Konitz, Phil Woods, Common, Roy Hargrove, Lewis Nash, and more.

Rick DiMuzio is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and Berklee professor with a doctorate in jazz composition, who leads his own ensembles and has performed or recorded with David Liebman, Steve Grossman, Bill Perkins, Kenny Wheeler, James Williams, Roger Humphries, John Hollenbeck, the Greg Hopkins Jazz Orchestra and Quintet, Bert Seager, Fernando Huergo, Phil Grenadier, Leo Blanco, and Kevin Harris. He also co-directed the Berklee Summer Jazz Workshop ensembles with Terri Lyne Carrington.

Keala Kaumeheiwa is a highly regarded bassist who studied both jazz and classical music before moving to New York City to perform with the New York String Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. He studied jazz bass and improvisation with legendary bassist Ron Carter and has performed with many great artists such as Jimmy Heath, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Wynton Marsalis, Bobby Watson, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and James Moody. Keala also currently teaches Jazz Ensembles at MIT and Phillips Exeter Academy.

Austin McMahon is a much sought-out drummer for his versatility in jazz and world music ensembles from trio to chamber jazz to big band. He recently recorded with the Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra (featuring Sean Jones, George Garzone, and John Fedchock) as well as the Macuco Quintet, the Hofbauer/Rosenthal Quartet, and groups he coleads (the Lost Melody and Man on Land). Among those with whom he’s recently performed are Kate McGarry and Keith Ganz, Jerry Bergonzi, Carmen Staaf, Noah Preminger, and Kevin Harris. Austin has played at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Dizzy’s Club, Jordan Hall, and numerous festivals, theaters, and clubs throughout the US and Europe. He won an Independent Music Award for Best Jazz Song and was nominated for Best Jazz Album.
