'The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives': Everything We Know About the New Hulu Show Premiering September 6
There’s book-tok, food-tok and so many more areas of the popular social media app TikTok that draw users in hour after hour, day after day. However, another facet of the app, known as “mom-tok,” is being talked about more often in the public eye in anticipation of the upcoming Hulu series, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. Read on to find out how the two connect.
What is ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ about?
The series, which premieres on September 6, chronicles the lives of six Mormon women who rose to fame for the videos they began sharing to TikTok of their day-to-day lives, which would eventually evolve into what is known as “mom-tok.” While their close-knit group seemed perfectly content to the casual viewer, a scandal leaves the women reeling.
In the trailer, many of the women express how their pursuit of social media fame is their way of breaking free of the gender roles that define some traditional Mormon marriages and relationships. “We are trying to change the stigma of gender roles in the Mormon culture,” said one of the women in the trailer for the series.
Their rapid rise to recognition, however, didn’t come without a price, as a member of their group came forward claiming that the various couples had engaged in “soft swinging.” As the trailer reveals, the scandal rocks their worlds — and their friendships — as they attempt to pick up the pieces. All the while, marriages are tested as well as their faith in this juicy, eight-episode series.
Who are the influencers starring in ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’?
The women who make up the cast of this upcoming series are faces you may have seen across your feed. Whitney Leavitt, Mayci Neeley, Mikayla Matthews and Taylor Frankie Paul are a few of the cast members, and the four are credited in the trailer with starting the group.
The cast also includes Demi Engemann, Jennifer Affleck, Jessi Ngatikaura and Layla Taylor. Their partners also play an important part in the series as well, as their relationships with them are tested by the scandal that rocks the group.
While the show has caused backlash from members of the Mormon Church who don’t condone the actions or behavior of the women in the show, Ngatikaura told ABC4 Utah, “Seeing the backlash from our community has been rough, but I also think that if they gave it a chance they would realize it’s just an empowering show about women in this religion and culture but navigating it differently because we’re all imperfect humans.”
See the show on Hulu, September 6.
