See Regina King's Oscar-Winning Performance in Emotional If Beale Street Could Talk Clip

Regina King proves she deserved her Oscar win in a new PEOPLE exclusive clip of If Beale Street Could Talk.

The 48-year-old stars as Sharon Rivers, the mother of lead character Tish (Kiki Layne), who is expecting a baby with her boyfriend Alonzo “Fonny” Hunt in the drama, based on James Baldwin’s 1974 novel of the same name.

King delivers grace and intimacy in her performance as she attends to Tish, who is heavily pregnant at this point.

“How’s Fonny?” Sharon asks.

“He’s beautiful. They beat him up but they didn’t beat him, you know?” Tish says while referencing Fonny’s stay in prison for a crime he did not commit.

The two soon receive drastic news that forces Tish to go into labor while Fonny is still in prison for a crime he did not commit.

“Tish, Tish, Tish… I got you,” Sharon says. “Look at me. Remember it’s love that brought you here. Love is what brought you.”

King received the 2019 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film late last month.

She thanked her director Barry Jenkins and James Baldwin, who wrote the book If Beale Street Could Talk in the 1960s.

“To be standing here, representing one of the greatest artists of our time, James Baldwin, it’s a little surreal,” she said. “James Baldwin birthed this baby, Barry you nurtured her, you surrounded her with so much love and support and so it’s appropriate for me to be standing here because I’m an example of when support and love is poured into someone.”

She began to cry as she thanked her mother, Gloria King, whom she brought as her date to the award show.

“Mom, I love you so much. Thank you for teaching me that God is always leaning, always has been leaning in my direction,” the star said.
