Selena Gomez Confirms Jennifer Aniston's “Friends” Scene Inspired Her 'Losing Face' Ahead of 2024 Emmys
Aniston's character teaches Joey (Matt LeBlanc) about the "gracious losing face" in season 7 of 'Friends' — and Gomez is taking notes for the Emmys
Selena Gomez really is a Friends superfan.
Ahead of Sunday's 2024 Emmy Awards — where she is nominated for outstanding actress in a comedy series for Only Murders in the Building — the actress practiced her "losing face" during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and fans couldn't help but notice the similarities between her reaction and a beloved Friends scene.
In season 7 of the sitcom, Jennifer Aniston's character Rachel works with Joey (Matt LeBlanc) to prepare him for the Soapy Awards, where he's been nominated. In the scene, she tells Joey how he should act if he loses, and Gomez seemed to copy all of the character's mannerisms on the Tuesday, Sept. 10 episode of Fallon's show.
After fan speculation about whether it was just a coincidence that Gomez's losing face was so similar to Rachel's, she addressed it on her Instagram Stories.
"Facts. @jenniferaniston taught me too lo'," Gomez, 32, wrote over a clip that highlighted the similarities between her losing face and the one Rachel demonstrated in Friends.
In the sitcom scene, Rachel tells Joey he should "probably start practicing [his] gracious loser face," for when "the cameras are on you and you wanna look disappointed but also that your colleague deserved to win."
During the the cast's appearance on The Tonight Show, Fallon asked Gomez and her costars Martin Short and Steve Martin to practice the same thing.
Gomez has long been outspoken about her love of Friends — and her admiration of Aniston, 55, who she has been friends with for years.
In 2020, when Aniston subbed in as guest host of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Gomez said she grew up watching Friends "at 10:30 every night on Thursday with my mom and I cried when the whole season was over."
"Rachel was my life," she admitted, and Aniston told her, "Selena, you've always been so sweet. You really are a genuine fan and it's amazing."
At this year's Emmys, both the actresses are nominated in major categories for their work — Gomez for Only Murders in the Building and Aniston for The Morning Show — but they won't be competing against each other.
Following her first-ever nomination, Gomez posted a photo of herself with a cake that read "Congratulations Emmy Nominee!" on it as she wrote, "I'm honored and insanely grateful for this" on her Instagram Stories.
She also thanked the Hulu show "for giving me Mabel."
The actress later told The Hollywood Reporter that it's "crazy" to be nominated. "I was just honored to be on such a show that was recognized. I feel so lucky, because there are so many great shows, and to even be considered, to have an opportunity like this, is such an honor."
She also revealed the sweet gift her costars sent following her nomination. "I received flowers from [Short and Martin]. I'm in L.A., Marty's always all over the world, and Steve is in New York. So, obviously, we can't be together, but we'll celebrate when we're back together again."
