What We Do In The Shadows Is Ending With Season 6, And I Just Can't Stop Thinking About Two Elements Of The Show I'll Miss The Most
The hit vampire comedy What We Do in the Shadows will come to a close after Season 6. This utterly unique and hilarious comedy based on the film of the same name has been making audiences laugh for five seasons, and as of today, it's official that its sixth installment will also be its final. And with the series coming to a close, I can't help but reminisce about two of my favorite elements, and the beloved characters I'll miss so much.
The critically acclaimed comedy follows a group of vampires and the familiar who lives with them as they go about life on Staten Island. With stand-out performances from Matt Berry, Natasia Demetriou and Kayvan Novak as your typical vampires, Laszlo, Nadja and Nandor, respectively, Mark Proksch hilarious portrayal of the energy vampire Colin Robinson, and the beloved Harvey Guillén as our favorite familiar Guillermo, this show’s cast is the reason is shines so bright.
Throughout its run, it received Emmy nominations, including one 2022, as well as other accolades from award bodies like Critics Choice. The show began in 2019 and will come to an end soon, as Vulture reported, but hopefully, Season 6 will go out with an awards-worthy bang.
Overall, this is a hysterical and wonderful little vampire show that is easily one of Hulu’s best series, and it will be dearly missed. However, before they begin protection one last time in January, let’s reminisce about two of my favorite elements of the show.
I’ll Miss Nandor and Guillermo’s Relationship The Most
From Nandor and Guillermo’s vampire and familiar relationship in Season 1, to the realization that Guillén’s character had vampire hunter genetics, these two have always had a hilariously turbulent and at times loving relationship.
Hopefully, We’ll Get This In Season 6
To me, this pair (along with Laszlo and Nadja’s relationship) is the heart of the show. They're almost will they/won’t they relationship is so entertaining, and I can’t help but smile. Then, after the events of the Season 5 finale – when Nandor didn’t kill his familiar and helped him turn back into a human – the care they’ve had for each other all along became very obvious.
Hopefully, in the final season, we’ll get to see Nandor and Guillermo in a healthy and content place, because I think all we want for this hilarious duo is happiness.
Literally Everything About Matt Berry’s Performance Is Ionic, And Will Be Dearly Missed
Obviously, everyone on this show is hilarious, however, Matt Berry’s Laszlo is easily the most eccentric and funny character in the bunch to me. Using a completely unique accent that feels like a mix of posh British and Mid-Atlantic, the actor plays Laszlo with charisma and commitment. He also gets some of the most memorable lines in the series, like this one about why they shouldn’t kill his pal Sean from Season 2 that had everyone in hysterics:
He's my best friend, he's my pal, he's my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy.
His word choice, inflection, gestures and overall charm are absolutely uproarious. Through lines and scenes like the one above, Matt Berry has proven time and time again that he’s a comedic icon, and I’ll miss his character dearly.
Along with Laszlo, Guillermo and Nandor, I'll also be sad to say goodbye to Colin and his not-so-sunny, yet hilarious, disposition as well as Nadja and of course, Nadja Doll. This show is truly fantastic, and it's one of Hulu’s best horror and comedy series because of its committed and naturally comedic ensemble.
While What We Do in the Shadows will be dearly missed, we still have one season left to look forward to. So, while we wait for Season 6 of the vampire comedy to hopefully premiere on the 2024 TV schedule, you can stream Seasons 1 through 5 with a Hulu subscription.
