Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin Got So Seasick Filming “Adrift” the Boat Became 'Basically a Swashing Bucket of Vomit'
Despite rough experiences on the open waters, Woodley said her 2018 film 'Adrift' "is my favorite thing I've ever shot"
Shailene Woodley has fond — and gross — memories of filming her 2018 movie Adrift.
While speaking with Bustle recently for a video interview to promote her new series Three Women, Woodley, 32, recalled that she and Sam Claflin experience significant trouble with seasickness while filming the survival thriller in the ocean.
"I loved making this movie," Woodley said, as Bustle showed a clip of her performance. "This movie in particular is my favorite thing I've ever shot because we did almost the entire thing on the open sea."
"The waves were so insane, and I grew up on the water, so I don't get seasick ever - but even I got seasick, and the entire crew was in the hole, it was basically a swashing bucket of vomit, so disgusting," she added. "And me and Sam, we'd be like [vomit, action! Do the scene, cut [vomit] and then we'd just keep going. It was wild."

The movie is based on author Tami Oldham Ashcraft's 2002 book Red Sky in Morning, which tells Ashcraft's true-life story of survival after she and her fiancé Richard Sharp were caught in the Pacific during Hurricane Raymond in 1983. Woodley portrayed Oldham in the movie, while Claflin portrayed Sharp, who died in the storm.

Woodley's Bustle interview also featured her reflecting on moments from throughout her two decades of acting and trying to recall specific lines. While looking back on her past work in movies like Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars, the actress noted how exciting it is to see many of her past costars continue to soar on to new heights.

Kravitz] just directed her first film, [Theo James] was just in White Lotus. It's really cool to see your friends and their passions and their craft continue to expand. I'm kind of giddy for it."
Three Women premieres Friday, Sept. 13 on Starz.
