Shailene Woodley Will Star in Biopic of Janis Joplin

As Jeremy Allen White prepares to film his biopic of Bruce Springsteen, Shailene Woodley is set to play legendary singer and musician Janis Joplin in a film.

The actor, best known for her star turn in A Fault in Our Stars, said of her role in the film, “I have a feeling Janis would be smiling ear to ear zipping down the PCH in her psychedelic Porsche knowing her story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and people that held so much significance to her,” she said in a statement released by the California Film Commission.

Woodley is set to not only star but co-produce as well. Temple Hill Entertainment is the production company backing the film, having previously produced the Twilight movies, First Man, Smile, and more.

Woodley continued, “Being a Los Angeles native myself, and having grown up working alongside industry locals, knowing our film will be created with some of the most gifted, passionate, and devotional people leaves me giddy.”

The project wasn’t revealed by Woodley, however, but in a press release issued by the California Film Commission announcing which movies and TV shows would receive tax credits. “Fifteen independent features will receive funding as part of this round of Film and Television Tax Credit Program awards,” it reads. The Janis Joplin biopic is among the supported projects.
