Simon Cowell Bestowed the Final 'AGT' Golden Buzzer on a Danger Act That Had an Accident

It was the final night of quarterfinals on Season 19 of America’s Got Talent and Simon Cowell had the final Live Golden Buzzer of the season, which would send one lucky act directly to the finale, allowing them to skip the semifinals.

As host Terry Crews introduced Sebastián and Sonia, he said, “Here’s an act that combines dance with aerial flying. It’s beautiful and poetic and dangerous. They just had a setback and, at the last minute, are having to completely rethink their performance.”

The setback was that Sonia fell during dress rehearsal, and despite Sebastián catching her, she still fractured her elbow.

“She’s okay, but she got a little fracture on her elbow, so for now she cannot continue, but we don’t want to give up, so I will continue alone,” he said. “Hopefully, she will recover soon, and we can perform together.”

So Sebastián took to the air, performing beautifully alone, and when he was done, Sonia came out on stage to be with him while he got his results from the judges.

Terry asked Simon why he was on his feet.

“I am on my feet Terry because a lot of people would have given up,” Simon said. “How do you do this act of two people with one person and then make it incredible? I think a lot of people would have just said, ‘You know what? We’ve had an accident and, therefore, we can’t continue.’ You did the opposite, you continued. Not only that. I’m not just saying this because of that but, by far, that was the best act we’ve had so far. Which is why, you get…” and he hit the Golden Buzzer.

Terry then checked in with Sebastián to see how he was feeling.

“Right now, it’s like everything was worth it,” he said. “It was really hard days. I only had three days to represent this act, and I wanted to represent as best I could.”

Then Terry asked Simon why he pushed his Golden Buzzer for Sebastián.

“That is the definition of courage,” the AGT judge responded. “You don’t give up. Seriously, and I just said, ‘Are you going to be okay for the final?’ and Sonia said ‘yes.’ The best by far tonight.”

Sebastián and Sonia will be going straight through to the finale, which will give her a couple of weeks to heal.

America's Got Talent airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
