Smokey Robinson asks fan for 'do-over' after flubbing Hanukkah pronunciation in video
Smokey Robinson is asking for a "do-over" after flubbing a video message to a fan.
Jeff Jacobson, who goes by @jeffjacobson on Twitter, took to the social media platform Sunday to share Robinson's video and explain the situation, writing, "My mom grew up on the same street as Smokey Robinson in Detroit. So for Chanukah, I wanted to reunite them via @Cameo. But the video takes a strange twist."
In the video, the singer, 80, shares pleasantries before mispronouncing the Jewish holiday, which can be spelled a variety of ways, including Hanukkah and Chanukah.
"Hey Margo, how you doing? Surprise, surprise," Robinson says in the video. "They wanted me to wish you happy Chanukah (pronounced Cha-noo-ka)."
He continued, laughing, "I have no idea what Cha-noo-ka is, but happy Cha-noo-ka, because they said so. Anyway, God bless you, babe, and enjoy Cha-noo-ka. Have a wonderful time!"
After the video, which now has over 2 million views, gained momentum, Robinson responded to Jacobson with a request to make things right.
"Hey @jeffjacobson - in the spirit of 2020, I'm gonna need a do-over! Please DM your mother's phone number so we can try this again," Robinson tweeted.
Jacobson didn't seem to mind the mispronunciation, later tweeting: "By the way, @smokeyrobinson can pronounce it any way he damn well pleases. He is a true legend whose music has been with me since birth. His kindness and generosity of spirit has already made this most-unusual 2020 Chanukah one of my family’s most memorable. Also, my mom says hi."
And on Tuesday, Jacobson posted a heartwarming update: Margo and Robinson reunited via phone call.
"Update - a Chanukah miracle - @smokeyrobinson called my mother while she was at school (she teaches Kindergarten) and it seems like they might be best friends now?" he tweeted. "Here is a short excerpt that someone in her class filmed. And don't worry, I made sure she put her mask right back on."
In the video, Margo touched on the viral flub while gushing over the singer.
"The main thing is, I love you dearly and – honest to God – you made my day and millions of people," she said before inviting him to dinner if he's ever in Vancouver. "Please stay healthy... and thank you, thank you, thank you, lots of love."
