NBC Paris Summer Olympics chief predicts 'getting promoted or fired' over Snoop Dogg role
PASADENA, Calif. ― If you're struggling to find a title for Snoop Dogg, who was named last month as a special correspondent for NBC's coverage of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, the rapper and entertainer has a suggestion.
"Just call me OG," Snoop Dogg 52, told reporters at the Television Critics Association Press Tour Wednesday. He wore a USA Olympic Team sweat outfit with "Snoop Dogg" and NBC's peacock logo on the back.
During the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Snoop Dogg and comedian Kevin Hart won internet fame with hilarious commentary on events such as equestrian dressage. But in the Paris games, beginning July 26, Snoop Dogg will be on the ground providing regular updates to NBC host Mike Tirico and viewers.
"It's going to be me in the field, at events, moving through the city, doing the things that Snoop Dogg does," he said. "I plan on shaking it up, bringing my own flavor. It's the Olympics. We only get it every four years. I'm going to make the most of it."
NBC Olympics executive producer Molly Solomon predicted an entertaining, unpredictable ride. "I'm either getting promoted or fired," she said. "One or the other."
"Promoted, baby. You’re getting promoted!" Snoop Dogg assured. "There ain’t no firing no boss lady. What are talking about?"
He did get emotional talking about his own experiences watching the Olympics and recalled screaming for joy with family and friends when Edwin Moses won the 400-meter hurdles in the 1984 Los Angeles games.
"That's what the Olympics does; it makes you feel like you were a part of the win," Snoop Dogg said. "It was like we knew this man who was an athlete."
Snoop Dogg vowed he won't come into the job unprepared.
"I don't never come in cold; I always come in hot," he said. "Don't worry about the research. I know everything about everybody. It's going to be fun."
The Paris Summer Olympics opening ceremony is going to be awesome
Solomon filled in details of the anticipated opening for the Paris Summer Olympics, which she predicted would be the "most memorable opening ceremonies in history and that's saying a lot."
"The Parisians have truly thrown out the playbook," said Solomon.
There will be no more groups of walking and waving world athletes. They are hitting the boats. The stage for the traditional ceremony is actually going to be Paris' Seine River.
"They're going to load the athletes of the world onto nearly 100 boats and they're going to float down the river at sunset in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators," said Solomon. "And it's all going to culminate at the base of the Eiffel Tower for the lighting of the cauldron. Can you tell that it's going to be spectacular?"
Oh mon Dieu, yes.
