Sofia Vergara has surprise 'Modern Family' reunion on 'AGT': 'The best husband!'
Wednesday’s America’s Got Talent live quarterfinals results show was a typically bittersweet affair, with several worthy acts getting cut. Nolan Neal, a former Hinder frontman, recovering addict, and two-time The Voice contestant whose likely one last shot at stardom was via AGT, went home, as did two-time The Voice Australia contestant Sheldon Riley, a fascinating fashionista and torch singer who’d shared a touching moment with judge Heidi Klum the night before. Polarizing comedian Usama Siddiquee, whose exchange with Heidi on Tuesday’s performance show hadn’t been so warm and fuzzy, was also, less surprisingly, eliminated.
But at least AGT had a few feel-good moments this Wednesday — most notably a surprise reunion between new judge Sofia Vergara and her old Modern Family co-star Ed O’Neill.
Host Terry Crews was conducting a virtual Q&A session with viewers around the country, when suddenly, the man formerly known as Jay Pritchett popped up on the big screen, teleconferencing from Hawaii. “Oh, my husband!” Sofia exclaimed adorably. “Where are you? I miss you so much!”
“I have to ask you a question: How did you manage to get the dream job you've always wanted, where you get to sit the entire time and someone else does all the work?” Ed asked Sofia, to which she quipped, “I don't know, Ed. God always is so good to me.”
Sofia then joked that she hasn’t “fallen down” on the job at AGT yet, something that apparently was a common occurrence on the Modern Family set. “You guys have never seen her fall — it's like a puppet and somebody cuts the strings straight down,” Ed chuckled.
Ed then then sent his well-wishes to judge Simon Cowell, who’s been out of commission for the past couple weeks after breaking his back in a freak electric bike accident, to which Sofia’s new co-star Howie Mandel quipped, “Unlike Sofia, when [Simon] falls, it's a bigger deal.” Recent fill-in judges on AGT’s live shows have included Kelly Clarkson and Kenan Thompson, so if Ed ever returns to Los Angeles from Hawaii (“Come back!” Sofia begged), maybe he could fill that fourth chair for an episode or two.
But there were only three judges on the panel this week. So, after America automatically voted through aerialist Alan Silva, Heidi’s Golden Buzzer pick Cristina Rae, and mentalist Max Major (while the above-mentioned Sheldon and Usama, along with Dance Town Family, Bone Breakers, and another Australian singer, child prodigy Annie Jones, were immediately cut), and the apparently extremely close instant Dunkin’ Save vote went to Simon’s Golden Buzzer act, W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew, it was time for Howie, Heidi, and Sofia to save one more contestant. It all came down to Nolan vs. drumming wonder Malik Dope, and while Sofia, who has witnessed addiction in her own family, was sympathetic to Nolan’s backstory, she was outvoted, with Malik prevailing.
Tune next Tuesday, when the America’s Got Talent Season 15 quarterfinals continue apace, with 11 more acts and probably many more surprises in store.
