Solo Final Jeopardy! shocks both fans and Alex Trebek: 'I cannot recall the last time'
It was a game for the record books on Tuesday’s Jeopardy! as only one of the three contestants advanced to the Final Jeopardy! round. Even host Alex Trebek was surprised by the turn of events.
“The stage looks like a really lonely place right now,” Trebek said to the remaining contestant, Kevin Walsh. “I cannot recall the last time we had only one player in Final Jeopardy!”
The reason for the solo final round was because the other two contestants didn’t have any money to wager. Contestant Natt Supab ended Double Jeopardy! with negative $400, while Alex Switzky landed on the Daily Double and lost a whopping $5,900 on the last clue of the round.
“Neither of you will be around to participate in Final Jeopardy!,” said Trebek. “But Alex you go home with $2,000, Natt you go home with $1,000, and Kevin you deal with this subject all by yourself in Final [Jeopardy!]. You can risk a bundle, you know?”
Fans on Twitter were shocked by the rare sight of only one contestant in the final round, as this is only the second time in almost a decade that something like this has happened.
I've never seen only one contestant make it to Final Jeopardy before. Big day, y'all.

In all my years of watching @Jeopardy , a very exciting thing happened on tonight’s episode that I can’t ever recall seeing before... @ the time of Final Jeopardy, only 1 contestant was left standing, as the other 2 were in the negative! Mind blowing! Well done, Kevin! (10.13.20) pic.twitter.com/8Eda8nw3l0

Lol that was maybe the most awkward #FinalJeopardy ever. Not sure why Seth Rogan didn't at least leave a $5 cushion or something so he could participate. @Jeopardy @JeopardyGuesser

I don't remember the last time I saw only one person go to Final Jeopardy! But it happened today.
Now what I want to know....what if NO ONE made it?— Elizabeth Hurd (She/her/hers) (@elizanhurd) October 13, 2020
Despite not competing against anyone else, Walsh elected to bid only $4,400 of his $14,400. Walsh’s correct answer brought his four-day total winnings to $81,700.
