“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” Trailer: Jim Carrey Returns (in Multiple Roles!) and Keanu Reeves Voices Shadow
'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' is in theaters Dec. 20
Keanu Reeves is joining the Sonic the Hedgehog universe.
The actor, 59, supplies the voice of Shadow in the first trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which brings back Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and James Marsden and Tika Sumpter in the adaptation of Sega's video game series.
"Sonic, Knuckles and Tails reunite against a powerful new adversary, Shadow, a mysterious villain with powers unlike anything they have faced before," teases a synopsis.
"With their abilities outmatched in every way, Team Sonic must seek out an unlikely alliance in hopes of stopping Shadow and protecting the planet."

Multiple outlets first reported that Reeves would portray Shadow, a super-powered hedgehog similar to Sonic with darker emotional undertones, in the movie back in April.
The character first was teased to CinemaCon 2024 attendees in Las Vegas on April 11 when Paramount Pictures hinted at Robotnik's creation of Shadow during footage shown at the convention.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 comes two years after the franchise's second movie, and on the heels of Paramount+'s Knuckles live-action spinoff series starring Elba as the red echidna, which takes place between Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3.
Carrey previously suggested that he was retiring from acting while promoting Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 2022.
"I'm being fairly serious," he told Access Hollywood at the time, adding, "It depends. If the angels bring some sort of script that's written in gold ink, that says to me that it's going to be really important for people to see, I might continue down the road. But I'm taking a break."

Though Carrey's villainous character's fate was left unclear at the end of the second film, the filmmakers teased Robotnik return on Feb. 2 writing on X with a clip featuring his laugh, "You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground. What you’ve seen from me is only a #shadow of things to come."
The new movie is directed by Jeff Fowler, who also directed the series' previous two entries. The cast also includes Krysten Ritter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally, Shemar Moore, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Alyla Browne and James Wolk.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is in theaters Dec. 20.
