'Sonic the Hedgehog' trailer: Jim Carrey goes full supervillain against toothy video-game icon

Imagine a movie based on Sonic the Hedgehog, with "Gangster's Paradise" on the soundtrack, starring Jim Carrey as a scenery-chewing villain. Sounds like something out of an alternate-reality 1996, but no, it's coming to theaters this November! Watch the first trailer for the live-action comedy, above.

In Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the star of the 1991 Sega Genesis game and several dozen subsequent video games, the speedy blue creature (voiced by Ben Schwartz) touches down on Earth, where he befriends a small-town sheriff (James Marsden) and must stop Dr. Robotnik (aka Eggman, played by Jim Carrey) from conquering the planet.

The trailer focuses mainly on Carrey, who's doing the sort of rubber-faced, over-the-top comic performance that was once his calling card. But Twitter can't look away from the digitally-rendered Sonic: specifically, his freaky, human-like teeth.

The bizarrely human-sized Sonic is also getting comparisons to another digitally rendered character who flummoxed fans.

Safe to say that the Sonic the Hedgehog trailer is not what fans expected. But there's at least one reason to look forward to the film.

Sonic the Hedgehog opens in theaters this November.
